I have twins going overseas to study and they will need laptops.
Initially I was planning to source the laptops locally, but I'm thinking I could purchase from Amazon and get them delivered overseas which could be less expensive. They will return to SA annually and enter SA on a SA passport, I presume they would then have to pay VAT?

Another factor, I see Amazon offers used (2nd hand) laptops such as these.

Appreciate your advice.
Thanks
John

No they don't need to anything when entering South Africa.

They walk pass customs like everything is normal, they don't need to declare anything.

I regularly fly out and take my laptop with and not once did they stop me. I even go with family and sometimes two laptops and many electronic devices. I took note this year twice out of my many trips we have to go through a scanner. Even then they don't stop me for further inspection.

If you want to buy 2nd hand laptops, that's also fine. Just read Warranty and Support first to make sure all is in order.

My mother came with her laptop, my new laptop and a tablet a few weeks ago.

Customs asked for nothing, as long as it's not in the box it should be fine when you travel with it.

Just like The Traveller I've never been stopped and searched at customs. In theory I could have bought over a huge Saitek joystick for a friend that, still inside its box, took over 3/4 of the space in my suitcase without paying tax or customs.

And if the laptop isn't in its packaging, they will have no way to tell that it was not one you took with you when you left the country.
