Hi

I'm trying to find out what the best buy laptop for a primary school child would be. Around R5000. Mostly internet surfing, youtube, movies, Word, email, etc.

Good quality screen important (bright, vibrant, reasonable resolution, etc). Light and easy to move around.

Any recommendations?

A bit off topic - a pity Chromebooks not a big thing outside the USA - about 50 million in use in their K12 schools
I was curios and stuck Neverware Cloud Ready on a 6yr old Netbook - 2gb Ram, Atom cpu, upgraded to 128 SSD.
To say I am gobsmacked, is an understatement - really enjoying this experince and find myself using it more than my Win and Linux desktops for quick browser stuff
If you have older laptop gathering dust - give it a try

Mostly entertainment
If you want to, Maybe also introduce your child to some coding, or graphic software. So maybe get something that is a little bit more than basic. I started designing houses when I was 12/13 and was so much fun and shaped my skills. Wish I also did some coding at a young age.

Nice one. I have a old Acer laptop and Netbook drifting around at home. Will try this on both.

Check ILife Zed Air 2 R3000 @ HiFo Corp or Incredible (longer warranty). Celeron N3350, 3GB RAM, 32GB eMMC, 14" FHD display

Ideal for a primary schoolmate, no rotating memory. Not upgradable, but how long school laptops can survive abuse?

Storage can be extended by SD card 64GB max.

These ilife/connex laptop have a dedicated slot to add a normal 2.5" sata or ssd drive too, stupidly good value. can either use as extra storage or reinstall windows on the drive you plug in.

Chromebook all the way - If you're interested, chances are very good I can put you onto the distributor. They're becoming more and more popular in SA schools and make a helluva lot of sense. They're also much nicer than they used to be and the lifespan is damned good now.

That's a horrible recommendation, those old 3060 Celerons are just as bad as the old 2 series atoms. Rather get a 33xx or 34xx series Celeron, massive difference.

Kids have to learn how to work with a slow pc just like we did. It will teach them appreciation in the long run.

I went with the Lenovo MiiX 320 on promotion at Makro for R4999. It has 4GB ram, 128 eMMC, and 1920x1080 (10") screen. Only Atom X5 Z8350 , but according to reviews it does the job OK. Also 2 in 1 (keyboard detach from screen) which is nice, esp for the kids. Includes active pen as well.

It is not about how slow device is (while I would argue on this), but there is more important issue how it display multimedia. It is what kids do in school.

The post you quoted was 100% correct: older Atoms/Celerons than Goldmount Plus (N3350) are not worth to buy. Now I see that OP is not listening either...
