I see a few low cost machines running AMD Athlon chips, I assume these aren't ideal but still preferable to Celeron?

Performance wise they are probably very similar. Ryzen 3 or i3 (12th Generation) minimum if you want to get the latest tech.

Yeah, I've realised I'm going to have to spend a bit more. If I get something with a useful lifespan at least as long as my old cheapie Acer then it's worth spending a bit extra I suppose.

I'd say R5k max, yes.

My sister was able to pick up this unit but with 8 GB of ram (that's what the salesman said according to her) from a local Incredible Connection. Maybe try your luck and see what they have in stock?

Yeah, I was looking at the HP 250 G8 on Evetech for R4999. Any thoughts on that specific machine?

I wouldn't touch Evetech due to their poor after sales support, but if you have to save a I'd rather chuck in R800 more and get this machine for the extra ram and then chuck in your old SSD:
