A friends laptop is giving problems and I was wondering if anyone knew what it was:

according to her half the screen is black. You can still see whats going on underneath it, as though looking through dark glasses. This only happens with white backgrounds- like MS word. It sounds like blue and other colours are fine.

could this be a loose connection somewhere that is easy to fix?

She has had a quote for R1500 to fix it, but she only paid R3000 for the laptop.

That's the trouble with 2nd hand laptops. I dont know why she didn't go and buy a NEW one for R3k as they're relatively cheap. Chances are that it's MAYBE a loose connection, but it's probably a busted screen. So she's lucky to walk away only paying R1500 for the repair.

its a new laptop, but out of warranty.....

so 1500 is a normal price to pay.

I'd drill it that laptop for some form of virus first - i know i have a program that you can use in "nightmode" view that gives this effect if not turned off.....how or what that setting changes i have no idea but possible something like that is going on before blaming hardware.
Try a reinstall maybe?

yes she is always picking up viruses. This is a good idea, ill boot up a live session of ubuntu and see if anything changes

Ok - if you have no luck there - to rule out the screen or invertor being or not being the problem connect up an output to an external monitor or TV.
If that shows the same problem then its probably GPU related & then its mobo swap time.
