So my boss recons it's time to upgrade my laptop. The current one is a 15.6" FHD Lenovo with 8GB of Ram, i7, etc. It's going to one of the new junior guys.

I use it for development and doing all sorts of resource intensive things. I make my computers sweat.

Budget is somewhere between 15k and 20k, preferably closer to the 15k mark purely so that I don't feel too guilty. I don't want to go up in size, so 15" and smaller if you please.
The higher the screen resolution the better. 8Gb of RAM is really a minimum and if it comes with a SSD that would be fantastic. Battery life is important but not critical, anything in that budget should be able to get a few hours though.

Damn. Where do you work that a junior gets an 8GB RAM i7? All the companies I have been in just don't understand that devs need a high spec laptop.

What would you say if I told you he isn't even a dev? :p

For that price I can't really see you getting much better than the Lenovo you have now, to be honest...

Have a look here for some price estimations: http://www.laptopdirect.co.za/

My recommendation in terms of brand tough, Asus. Maybe G55 (although specs aren't as good as mentioned, which will then be a downgrade), or maybe G75, but that's more than R20 000. Maybe have a look at Acer as well, from what I've heard they produce very good laptops in terms of specs and build quality.

I'd cry.

Anyway you could wait for Lenovo a bit to bring out a high def screen laptop but who know when that will be. Best laptop of theirs at the moment is the X1 Carbon but unfortunately it is only 14" but it's nice and lightweight if you like mobility. Alternatively you could go MBPR with bootcamp.

Dell e6530? I have one and love it.. quality product.

I reckon you'd be better off waiting for the 2nd half of the year when there will be newer CPU's & GPU's out
Otherwise another to look at:

Oversea models you can choose more config options - like go larger mSATA SSD card + put a SSD into the main HDD bay etc
These aren't covered in bling & would fit into office environment without looking out of place.
Backlit keyboard can be turned off.
If the power brick is the same size as mine it ain't little tho - 170mmx80mmx40mm (0.8kg)180Watt

My issue with Lenovo and specifically Thinkpads here is that their driver support is terrible. I simply can't get Bluetooth to work after having done a full format and I've tried everything under the sun. It's apparently a very common problem.

I'll have a look at the Dell machines and see what they have to offer these days. They're the developer-spec'd machines at Discovery - come fitted with SSDs lately if I'm not mistaken.
