Hi all.

So this is my situation:

I am in matric now and I have a really weak PC which is just good enough to run Sims 3 on low graphics. :D

Anyways, I am going to university into res next year and I have about R6000-R8000 to spend on a computer to take with me (i certainly am not keeping this one).

Also, I am not really too concerned about playing high-graphics games (such as Crysis and that type thing). But I obviously want a decent Graphics card on my system to play some games on high graphics like CSS for example.

So I have thought about this a lot, and I was wondering what you guys think i could do with such a limited amt of money? Is it really useful having a laptop in university? Or is desktop fine? Also, how reliable is it getting a laptop, they seem to have a life span of 2yrs then they break (not to mention impossible to upgrade)?

Any help/opinions/advice/personal experiences will be appreciated :)

Also: If anyone can also provide prices if you are selling something relevant then don't be shy

Ah, yes ofcourse. Keep forgetting about that one 'cos the netbooks I've dealt with are using 160GB spinny drives.

You could get a 10" netbook for R2000 and a fairly decent PC for R6000...

I was thinking about that actually. But then you get deals like this

WHich actually brings another question - would you trust BoB? check that deal, seems too good to be true. It isn't the BEST lt out, but it is what i am looking for and very cheap

@TheRift Acer Aspire One 512ram 8gig solid state with linux at incredible
Get it install Ubuntu and you're set if you want to sit in the bib and type a doc or two.
Get the PC for the res room for some Online gaming. Cheap Core2duo or Core2quad with a Ati 4850 should serve you without hassles within ur budget.

Thanks, I think this is my best bet. Do you know how safe it is to have a desktop sitting in your dorm? Is theft in res not a problem (UCT)?

I went to maties and it wasn't a problem back then. I was on the thing 24/7 though so little chance of anyone stealing it :D
Aggg but pc's dont like liquid and beer is a liquid and things happen but thats half the fun of rez! ;)

Remember a guy peeing in he's roommate's microwave after mistaking it for a urinal in his "state" Luckily your dad's getting you a pc and not a microwave...

LOL @ Vegeta, thanks for the heads up!

@ ponder - that site doesn't seem to be working on local cap. :( But I will have a look-see there on 1 Dec

I'm at Stellenbosch, also in res. I have a Desktop and I'm very happy with it, but a good laptop will most certainly be a good choice as well. Sometimes very useful to be mobile.

If you can find a laptop with a Core 2 Duo processor and 2/3 GB Ram for R8 000, you should consider it.

PS. Theft is not really a problem here at Stellenbosch, but I'm not sure about UCT.

Go to DigitalAddiction.co.za and see the Gigabyte Q1580V laptop there on the front page for R8599. Just over your budget but that will certainly play most games and means you don't have to get two machines...

Hi thanks everyone for the advice... I think what I will do is buy a new desktop with core 2 quad (not exactly sure how much better that is than core 2 duo and dual core) with a nice bit of ram and reasonable graphics. Then I will either get a 2nd hand lt or a netbook.

Aprreciate all the help guys, thanks.
