Laser Detector / Mobile Speed Camera Band

LOL...how can you mention "server" and "calculations" and "metro" in one sentence?

must be hefty IBM system x's to manage our traffic data...plus its images so our bandwidth will probably not handle it...PLUS, SITA will have to impliment it which means it will never happen or will only work for 3 weeks and then they'll realise they did not buy licenses for the apps running on the system x's and then the system x's will fail becuse they using primative data centre coolingby borrowing cooling from the A/C in the meyors office...its just not going to work, odds are STACKED against metro!

when i drove to durbs and back in dec i saw like 2 manned cameras the whole trip.

as for the average speed fines, i'd like to see someone argue to the judge that the calculation was wrong and that his average speed of 150km/h does not make sense. i have only been to court on 2 occassions and they can be quite intimidating.

i should think that if this system is running well in the UK all the technicalities and legalities have been worked thro'.

Anyone heard this rumour that the trafiss are developing a NEW camera which will be able to detect your speed over dipps, around corners, farther away compared to current devices...

so if you are doing 160 in a 120 zone 4 km's away from where the traffis are sitting and there are 4 bends between you and the Metro...they'll still get you???

myth or reality?

Reality - this system has been in use in the UK for several years already. No development needed, just put mula by da back pocket....

As far as detectors go, you cant slow down fast enough to prevent being caught by a laser. With the old radar systems you still had a fighting chance as the radar took a couple of "pings" to get your speed. the lasers are much faster.

I think you guys underestimate the metro.:o

To develop the avg speed system you need only one small team of uber competent people. If they really want it (they do) then red tape won't get in the way & they have the cash to do it.

e.g. Senior metro surfs to our Software & Web Dev subforum. Picks 5 guys drops R1mil on each ones doorstep & promises another mil if its perfected within 30 days. R10 mil total cost for working avg system in 30 days.:wtf: Yeah OK thats a bit exaggerated but still with clout+cash+determination a lot is possible.

Check your next speeding fine. It will state tracking distance. If it tracks a distance that means you have time to react. If you are a fast driver with slow ass reflexes you might get caught. So far I have been able to slam on the brakes when tracked with V1 laser using the Cobra 7100.... so how do you explain that?

It actually is both myth and reality. It is a myth that they can do it with a laser camera as that only works line of sight and by law is not allowed to be used over more than 400m.
It is a reality that they can trap you over a long distance. The first station is a number plate recognition setup which starts the clock, takes your picture and looks up the details of your registration number. The second station is 5/10/20/..... km down the road and also takes your picture, looks ups your registration details and stops the clock. It then calculates your average speed over the known distance and if you have exceeded the limit they post you a ticket. This is the ultimate money making racket.

Well either way, it will give us 2 opportunities to pick up the cameras with our newly purchased radar detectors... hehehe

I don't see this happening, as the pick up on both points will vary. their is no way to get a laser to mark you exactly. So how do you get an accurate avg speed? You can argue that and it will be thrown out.

No, its not the average of two speed readings. Its (distance between cameras)/(time between pictures). Your detector will not be useful.

They piloted this on the N3 a while ago. I understand it was successful.

If this becomes the norm, then the detector will still pick up the laser. Only thing that changes is you cant speed up straight after the first camera, you need to wait till you pass the second camera. That is the only downside (Damn I will have to drive the legal speed limit for a bit ;)

Thats if they use laser and not the lines. Also i understand it is multiple cameras not just the start and end, but i could be wrong.

oh dear, well lets hope its not multiple cameras... hehe. Lines are fine cos the TOMTOM will have the stationery cameras updated regularly. If they go back to the old system where they place lines every time in different spots, even better cos those you can spot easily.

OK, so then I'll definately have a fine waiting for me in Wolmeranstad coz in Dec I blasted down the N12 and about 10km's outside Wollies I was doing 200kph pushing cars otu the way, it was fun but obviously wrong, i submit to wrongdoing - anyway, as i sped a taxi driver in oncoming traffic showed me there are people trapping and I stomped on the brakes, probably took me 3 seconds to get to 130kph and I 'cruised right into Wollies...now questions remains:
1) Did they trap oncoming traffic or coming traffic into Wollies?
2) did they trap from the front or the rear
3) I did not see them - my wife who rode in the yaris came and told me she hopes I did not speed as there were traffis sitting in bushes.
4) The taxi driver warned me either too late or too early, as he may have went passed them and then warned me, or he may have seen them from far and warned me, which is highly unlikely - anyway no fines as of yet on PayFine.co.za...

You are phukked! no wait, your Alfa can't do 200km/h :D You are fine :p

LMAO - that's what I was told - checked Payfine everyday to make sure...

changed my disc late and nothing, no fines...havent received any court dates nothing - BUT, don't traffis stop you if you doing those speeds???:wtf:

Check your next speeding fine. It will state tracking distance.

U got a sample of that? I havent had a speeding fine in over 20 years so i cant say. But take that tracking distance, then take the speed travelled, then figure out how fast it nailed you. At 120 Km/h youre travelling at 33 meters per second. at 160 youre doing 44 m/s. How fast can you go from 160 to 120 without having an accident ?

m/s = Km/h *1000 / 60 / 60

ummm - they dont need to know what speed you were doing when the photos were taken, just the amount of time it took you from the one photo to the next one. they know the distance and can calc your ave speed.

you guys are giving metro tooo much work with all these distance between two points is avg speed crap...

160-120 is a big ask, but if you cant slow down in time, at least you can minimize the difference and won't cost you jail time or a heftier fine... I dont do those speeds, I travel at max 140 true speed (as per TOMTOM) that does four things:

1) Allows me to drive with cruise control and not be at the same speed of other drivers (cos that just makes work as everyone driving without cruise control speed up downhill and slow down uphill - IRRITATING!!)
2) Gives me a delta of 10 KM to reduce by intime to not get a fine as you are giving 10km grace by the cops.
3)Feels like Im actually driving a decent speed but still safe, because in my car 120 true feels soooo slow.
4) 140 is optimum fuel usage in my car.

oh ja, they prolly just scan all cars going thro' that point.
