Hi

I need some advice on laser printers please. What would be a good buy for home use (low volume). Some are advertised for between R2 & R2,5k. What about cartridge costs? Do they also give the printer away below cost and nail you on the cartridges?

Comments will be appreciated.

HP or Samsung... I think the HP cartridges last longer than the Samsung ones. Cartridges can go up to a thousand bucks, but you should get a lot of mileage out of them.

HP LaserJet 4 Plus <<<---- Best Laser Printer ever made... ours is still running!

I have a HP 1010(i think) and its been an awesome little printer. Also have an epson which i think is complete crap.

Depends if you want B&W or colour.

Take it from me --- buy yourself a HP.

For home use B&W get the one from Makro (sells for about a R1000). I have the 1018 and it works great. Printer is used daily and the cartridge lasts me about 18 months. (It all depends on what you print - I print loads of text, toner saving on). You get generic cartridges cheap from places like Cartridge depot.

For colour get yourself the HP one from Makro - goes for about R2000 or so - it is a laserjet color - wife has that one and it is magic.

I also have a HP 1018 (actually 2!) and it works beautifully. The toner is expensive though... around R700-R750 bucks. At one time I picked up another HP 1018 and extra toner for R1200, hence having one spare.

I also got myself a Samsung SCX-4521F from Hifi Corp. It went for R1699 and can handle scanning, printing and faxing (the reason I got it for). It's very easy to use and performs nicely. Toner goes for around R800 though.

i have hp2015 with jetdirect in my office and its nice and fast, you can get one that has wifi connectivity!
for colour check out the hp2700 series colour lazer

We've got four HP 1020s and one HP 1300 at work. Brilliant printers. Pity the 1020 has been discontinued:(.

We've also got an HP P1005, but I still prefer the 1020.

just purchased the hp 1006 laser jet printer for R1199.00 and a spare cartridge at
R795.00 from incredible connection seemed to be a good buy, was told the cartridge should be printing around 2000 pages only time will tel

HP are pushing their colour inkjets more than the lasers. They reckon it's better now but I have my doubts.

Inkjet cartridges work out much more expensive than laser when you take into consideration the number of prints you can get. Also inkjet cartridges tend to dry up if not used for a while.

That shouldn't be... I paid R300 odd for mine from a stationery outfit that services corporates only.

The 12A toner for the 1018 definitely retails for R700+ for the original HP ones. If you get them for R300 it must be refills/compatible ones... otherwise it's the bargain of the century!
