Friday is the last day to lodge complaints or comment about the Public Protector candidates.

The candidates were announced on Tuesday, June 28, giving the public over a week to make submissions to the ad hoc committee tasked with finding a replacement for Thuli Madonsela, whose term comes to an end in October.

"It should also be borne in mind that objections against a nominee or applicant will not be automatically used to eliminate a particular candidate," committee chairperson Makhosi Khoza said at the time.

"The committee will follow due process in validating such objections."

The candidates included deputy Public Protector Kevin Malunga, African National Congress MP Loyiso Mpumlwana, Economic Freedom Fighters chairperson Dali Mpofu, Judge Sirajudien Desai and academic Professor Pierre de Vos.

Khoza on Tuesday urged members of the public and civil society to lodge their complaints on time. The committee appealed to anyone making comments or objections to disclose their identity, so their submissions could be authenticated.

Candidates would be shortlisted and interviews held after the August 3 elections.

Over 70 people were initially nominated. This number was whittled down to 59 after some nominees declined or were unavailable.

Bad idea if any political party members are allowed,
Isn't the whole point to be objective?
So why not eliminate the anc,da,and eff guys straight away.

Why? Madonsela was an ANC person. She is still unbiased and effective

So a lawyer or advocate should be in picked?
Or somebody who completely independent and not scared from a fight, like Derek watts

Legally, it has to be a attorney, advocate or judge

True, didn't know she was anc, but look how they tried to discredit her, with stories about the CIA and such.
I just think whoever they choose, shouldn't be able to be influenced easily by giving them perks to favor one political policy vs another.

Sitting here, I can't think of one thing the PP did where any of their investigations directly lead to prosecution of corruption. Outa is doing more for the public.

Sure. That doesn't necessarily preclude them from belonging to a political party.

That would be unfair discrimination in the extreme. As someone has already pointed out, Madonsela did not let her political membership get in the way.

Personally, I would prefer a bit of continuity in the PP's office, so her Deputy Kevin Malunga would be my pick. Pierre de Vos would be interesting too, purely to annoy his critics on this forum :D
