Last step for Ubuntu Natty

Great minds think alike. ;)

Was loading this just before rpm posted this story.

Not sure if I like the look of it. Also, is it possible to still have files on your desktop or is it like KDE now where you can have files drag and drop stuff onto your desktop space? Bleh!

Really looking forward to try/play with something new again ... have not tried out any of the pre-releases yet, rather waiting until the final ships.

I have been using the netbook version for quite some time now on an old ancient notebook. It takes a bit of getting used to (like all things different :) ) and I have to say I really got to like it. Will have to give the full ubuntu a run to check it out.

Unity looks like the UI for touchscreen interfaces. (although I dont like Gnome3 either)

everything is big and clunky. well see how this goes

that interface looks different to every other unity screen shot iv seen. Is that some sort of skin

+1

I'm really excited, the old interface was getting bland, I'm glad ubuntu is forging ahead with thier own interface.

I don't bother with beta releases (seeing as how I'm not a developer). Rather wait for the final release which has all the beels and whisles so to speak.

Firsrtly, the picture is wrong. That is a picture of 10.04 netbook edition. Unity looks completely different.

I've been using 11.04 since alpha 2, and am really beginning to love it. I've had some stability issues, but hopefully these will have been sorted out before the final release in 2 days time.

I think Unity will really show its power when more lenses are developed.

Personally, I think it leaves Windows 7 completely in the dust with regard to usability. Windows 8 better be good.

This is just my personal experience.
After running a Linux desktop fulltime for close to 8 years, I finally moved away from Linux on the desktop, and Natty might have just given me the last push. Once again, devs are dividing their efforts. Choice is a good thing, but so is desktop consistency. I have been hacking away at it, have learned a lot, and had fun, but now I just need stuff to work. Ubuntu has broken drivers for my touch pad, fixed it, broke it again. My sound still does not work 100% out of the box, across 3 models of laptops. VAAPI acceleration is still broken on my Intel GPU, unless I compile from sources. The list goes on. I always used to love fixing it. Instead of fixing small lingering bugs and usability issues, they create a new UI. It's a bit unfair to judge all distro's based on this experience, but I have done my fair share of distro hopping.
Not being a windows fan, and needing a unix style environment for work, I made the jump to OSX.
I will always run Linux on my servers, as it simply cannot be matched, but on the desktop they need to get their act together.

Started using 10.10 Netbook on a Gigabyte MC1022 and all basically worked out the box, apart from Bluetooth (Non-Issue for me). Was not to enthralled with the GUI.
Also found the netbook release to be slightly sluggish.

Then I decided to move to the 10.10 Desktop release on the same netbook.... much better. Little faster and better desktop real estate without the forced theme in the netbook release.

I do look forward however to this next release to see the changes made but will probably still stick with Desktop release.

I see that according to that page, the Unity is only for folks who have gfx cards capable of handling 3D, and which can use Compiz, and that Gnome would still be used on those machines that cannot handle Unity. I wonder if it will be user selectable.

you will have to wait for 11.10 for 2d support. switchng back is pretty easy to do. Log out, then select gnome classic desktop at the bottom of the login screen.
