i used to ping telkomsa.net at 15ms average.

Now im getting 52ms. There were like 4 telkom vans a few roads up at the same place doing stuff... i hope they haven't banged anything up

I live in the Morningside Sandton Area by the Redhill School. I am on Mweb ADSL 384.

My router used to detect max dl rate at 2000kbps and up at 512kbps. today its at 640/284.

I am not downloading a thing neither is any computer on the network neither do i have any spyware using the net.

Please help! Any mweb users having this problem or any1 in the area?

Thanks

So, iow, YOUR latency is up ?

Sorry - just your topic is a bit odd ?

Mine is absolutely spot on with 35/36ms on a 384 line.

omw 2000kbs, 640 is still more than anyone should get! Think telkom found a glitch and just fixed it. Too bad

Nearly everyone's line runs at a magnitude far greater than what your speeds actually are, for example my downstream and upstream link speeds are 2048 Kbps and 640 Kbps respectively. We all connect at these types of speeds. However, Telkom then proceeds to throttle the bandwidth so that we get the speeds we paid for (512K/256K or 384K/256K).

ok so i called them, they dont know whats going on. they say no telkom people have been in my area today yet i saw em with my own eyes. i heard something bout a contention ratio from someone.. whats this?

It's how many people "share" the line you are on.

When they sell you a 384 or 512k line, your line can go up to those speeds, it's not guaranteed to always be at those speeds.

That is exactly what they do overseas - but as we know, their services are a lot cheaper.

You'll usually share with 30 to 50 people - and most the time, won't even know - the idea and tech works.

... so long as your ISP doesn't oversubscribe on thier available bandwidth ...

does this affect ur latency at all cause my dl speeds are 100%

line quality can effect latency. so yeah, your latency can be independent of your download speeds.

it has happened overnight. to me and a friend about about 5 km's away but that must use another exchange. can this happen overnight?

Yes. i am in Fourways, and have the same problem. Since 2 days ago i am connecting at 640/384. Used to always be 2000+.
Lag is so bad gaming is impossible too.
Ping used to be around 20, now it is 70.

(i have the 512 package)

this is odd, my latency dropped back to where it used to be 3 months ago, 10ms avg to closes hop.

At same time you guys went up, think telkom giving random people better performance at random times lol

I stay in the bedfordview area. I got my adsl 384 installed on monday. I was getting pings of 10-15, untill around thursday where i started getting a latency of 50-60. I also experienced the same prob with the maxdl/upl speeds.

ok so its not an area specific thing unless many exchanges are beeing worked on lately, and ive seen so many telkom ppl riding about lately. Everyone having this prob of latency pls email telkom online support. oh and apperntly the 640/384 thing is good for your modem in terms of modem sync or something. mine was fine b4 so why change i say.

I still have the problem, and connect at 640/384. The latency is so bad gaming is terrible. I hope they fix this or i will blow a fuse :\

its just odd hey. all i need is for a telkom employee to tell me whats going on. but they don't seem 2 know anything. Anyway if ur problem is fixed or u hear from them pls post ASAP, i will do the same on my side. Thanks (playboy this applies to u as well if u dont mind)

Thanks again guys

oh and please post which routers ur usin at the moment

I still have this problem, sat waiting for Telkom Tech for 30 mins before i hung up today. Anyone else got any response? It is getting pretty ridiculous :\

yeah i spoike to them last thursday with no luck... they kept on saying that it wont affect browsing and i was like its for GAMES! then they say they haven't received any complaints and i just thought "ummm... aren't i giving a complaint?"... how many ppl have to complain b4 they fix a problem. maybe a third party adsl company can fix this.

but i think its an exchange thing.
