Latency is up...

This is really bad though. If this continues i will have to quit onlinegaming completely, since it really is bad. Ill phone Telkom tomorrow again.

They know that they have done an "upgrade" on some exchange, after talking to them. The funny thing is that they managed to mix my tlf numbers with another problem report, so they were phoning me again and again, saying "Joachim, is that you?". They didnt know where they were phoning, and they are a telecom company hehe. They thought i was at Halfway house and couldnt find me, but i am in Fourways :P
They are busy on it, so lets see what happens

I just talked to the exchange people, and they know they have done the change to 640/384. They are investigating the problem and hopefully they will sort something out.

Yeh keep us posted. I'm most probably on a different exchange to you, but its affecting me as well. I'm in bedfordview.

Yes, i told them about you in Bedfordview, the dude in Sandton etc and many others around JHB. I am just wondering if this is directly relating to connecting at 640/384, because the change to connect at 640/384 isnt an error it seems according to them. They werent really aware of the ping problem, but they said they will phone me after they have checked it out so ill keep my fingers crossed.

OK. Here is what is going on:
I talked to a Telkom technician today, and he said they are running a trial on three exchanges that people will connect to at 640/384. This is to make ADSL modem synching better, and to increase the distance people can connect with ADSL from.
He also said that connecting at 640/384 will be applied to all exchanges in the future.
They were not aware of the latency problem at all, and that this was affected by the change to 640/384.
The technician will take this further up the ladder to see what they can do about it.

i hope there tests reflect this latency issue to the ppl "up the ladder". and they dont just brush it off

iam in the 4 ways area .....

guys iam have the same problem ping just jumped to >70 a few days ago use to average 10 ! and also my line thing is now 640/284 use to be 512/1024 i know they did something and they refuse to admit it they told me they cont garantee latancy and the line is "up to standart" they prolly shuffed another 2000 extra and that y we gating bad latancy normally the ratio per line should be 50:1 and 20: in businesses ..... sad i dont know what to do .. isdn ppl get better ping
telkom is just so ignorant they just dont care and they know for sure what the problem is but they r ignoring it couse only gamers can sence the change in latancy thr general public cont couse thay only browse...any way i dont know what to do

telkom...

u know what the prob wit telkom is .... there is absolutly no communication i had 3 ppl call me about my loged fault and i had to explain everything from the start every time and this one chik calles me and shes like "so is ur adsl line up and running can we remove the complaint " i was like "my adsl line was never down there was a nother problem " so shes like so we cont remove the fault log " i was like " no u cat couse the problem is still not resolved" so i seriously tough that even if 10000 call to complain they wont have a clue if the complaint is reacurring , theylll just think its its a new one everytime

Looks like the same problem has just hit me. While browsing the modem lost sync, I checked the router and now the donwlink speed is 640k only. It was 2meg before.

Latency to saix.net is now:

It was under 20ms before.

I'm in Cape Town.

I used to get low ping and then it double for bout 3-4months and since our dslam was down for 1 whole day my ping is very very good again. Im also from Capetown. Below is a few icmp pings:

1.) Used to be 47ms lowest and avg around 55ms.

Seems like more and more people are being affected. WTF is telkom doing about this !?! I would love to know...

Omfg

ok guys. thank *** im not the only person that knows about this.
i got my new line installed yesterday (20/02/05) morning and latency was fine as pings on the local Enemy Terriroty server were averaging 45. I tried to play later but my ping was averaging 105 :(. So i did a latency test to the pppoe server/dslam and found that i was averaging 50ms !!!!!. after numerous calls to the helpdesk, the techie told me "off the record" that they were chaning the DSLAM/DSLAM settings on the exchange (i live in claremont, cape town). This resulted in my downstrea/upstream going from 2045/512 to 640/384. Why this introduces additional latency beats me, buts its there (average of 50ms on first hop). This is a major problem IMO as any realtime application will be affected (gaming, ssh, etc).
Nobody at the help desk knows about this "problem" and if you tell them that you can connect and you can browse fine they just say "this is a best-effort service....".
I would _really_ like to speak to the technicians/network manager about this.
The techie also confirmed that this will be done nation wide :(

We really need to tell telkom about this problem, but the only comm channels ive tried have proven fruitless. Ill keep you guys posted if i hear anything else

The info i got seems to correspond with Floruro's so it doesnt sound like a rumour anymore (the techie told me it was a rumour).

Also, shouldnt telkom post a notce about this on the noticeboard ???

I've been having the same latency increase. When I first got my ADSL in Oct 2003 I was getting 1500/700 down/up and 10-20 ms in a first person shooter like counter strike. As of today im getting 600/350 and latency of 50 ms or more....

Something is definately afoot....time will tell but I'll give my Telkom ADSL installer a call, see what he says...

People need to realise something, ADSL has no SLA. You have no latency gurantee with Telkom, and never had. Thats the contract you agreed to.

As "sad" for you as it is, you're being highly unrealistic. That latency is barely worth complaining about and you're unlikely to get Telkom to bite.

It may or may not return to normal, best deal with it.

Most of the traceroutes posted suggest that the problem is between your self and the line (the latency doesnt increase after that) - A decrease in your link speed is not going to increase latency (and the amount that people are complaining about, I highly doubt that much is truely wrong).

Even if your first hop ping was 12ms, if it was 40 after the second, and is still 40 now, and only travels +/-5% there is bugger all wrong and you're simply being pedantic

If you have genuine packet loss issues, report degredation of service to your local exchange.

If you have a genuine complaint try [email protected].

Creating mass hysteria and getting your panties in a twist over 50ms won't solve it...

is any1 experiencing this who has an Unshaped account ???

Karnaugh, why is that latency barely worth complaining about ? The increase in latency from 10-15ms to 50ms is causing very poor game pings compared to before. If all adsl users were able to play games properly before, why must they put up with crappy performance now ?
Yes, there is no SLA, but telkom cant expect people to get a line that has extremely high costs with an SLA to play games.
