Latency on 4 Mbps adsl

have you tried to run Zertops line test tool? Usefule to eliminate any issues with your ADSL connection.

Could you ping bras.afrihost.com so that we can rule out the exchange. (bras.afrihost.com is a device sitting just behind the exchange, should be under ~25-30ms.)

If I tracert to bras.afrihost.com on my connection I have never got values of worse than 10 ms. Why do you indicate the 25 to 30 ms is considered normal? Is the difference solely attributable to connections set on interleaved?

Why does Telkom to change a connection to interleaved anyway?

I have reported the broken link to Zertop. I have found the tool very useful in the past, and have solved numerous connectivity issues with the help of the tool.

The basis of the tool is a ping test/trace route to bras, regardless of which ISP is delivering the service.

Log into your router, you're looking for a statistics page. If you give your router model, we can direct you more easily.
On this page it should say Attenuation and then two numbers, SNR or Noise Margin and two numbers, it will also have, if you have 2Mbps, 2048Kbps or close to it, for 4 Mbps, 4096Kbps or close to it, etc.

Thanks for the link and explanation. I think what is saving me is the fact that I am using such an old ADSL modem and router. Telkom apparently tried to reconfigure my line and could not get it to work. They phoned me and wanted to know why I do not use the router that is associated with my profile. I played dumb and said I don't knw what they are talking about, gave them the detail of my router and then got the response that as they are unable to remotely reconfigure it, they will leave my settings as is!

I like it that way ----
 
Try the administration option. There may be some more options available there. Somewhere you should be able to get the values we are looking for.

you don't have line stats within the UI, strange, first I've ever heard of a modem not having it.

As a few others have already said, your latency has increased because your DSL sync is now on interleave path (as opposed to FastPath). This is because a system that Telkom runs, called ASSIA, changed your DSL sync profile. ASSIA 'thinks it will give you a better and more stable internet link'. Search for ASSIA on this forum if you want to know more about it.

Your copper distance to the exchange will NOT have an effect on your latency (technically it does, because, you know, signal propagation takes time over any medium, but its so small eg 5km takes like 0.15ms one way). Line sync stability can have an effect on latency, but given the traceroute/ping stats you've provided, It doesn't look like you have line issues.

Is 40ms acceptable? It depends. If you're not a 'gamer' playing online games, then its fine. If you are a gamer, then 40ms (to the first hop), is not really that great.

Yes, but latency increase due to the DSLAM or other switches that are used when you are at a distance. It's easier to run a cable to a switch 2km away and then to the client's house than to run a copper line all the way there.

@jphegers, I am sorry but I don't know how to read those stats, maybe Mr.Jax knows?

Your line stats are good though, so you shouldn't have to be on interleaved if you're a gamer. Otherwise just leave it.

That is a rather old modem/ADSL router. My guess one of the original Billion Modem/routers. Could you provide us with the make and model number?

in don't know how that modem router will react to being faced with an interleaved signal, if I am right.
