Latency on HSDPA/3G

I got myself the E270 package, round bout the 26th December, and i had lower latecy than my one buddy one ADSL, weird, i know. But ever since exactly 2 weeks ago, my connection started to crap out, dc, very unstable. Log on and i have like 300ms latency, next moment its 1500ms.

This is the weirdest thing, with EDGE i get a more stable connection with about 800-1500ms, so i find myself playing with EDGE more. I tried Gamemax, great, sub 400ms but i dont know if il get DC with it too. if i do, that means, correct me if im wrong, that i have to re-log into gamemax, as i had 100% packet loss, which would really suck.

Does your connection drop, or do you just dc from wow ?

If you only DC from wow there is no need to re-log into Putty/Socs. But if your connection drop, the Gamemax server will time out.

I only get dc'd from wow, my connection stays going fine :(

Anikan, whats your latency with the 3.0.8.9506 patch? A couple of people including myself are getting good latencies playing on HSDPA since the patch was released...

em, well i have dced from wow a few times and lost connection with gamemax all and all, it timed out. im using th trial version, and have used it like 20 times, do you think they kick me off for using there trial version so much? haha

I think my dces arent game related, might be my connection that sucks, iv got mtn 3g...i even unplugged my wireless keyboard and mouse stuff, cuz i thought maybe that interefered with my connection, disabled my windows firewall, as it is a piece of **** anyway.

My latencies start low, around 300ms, then fly to 2000ms, what do you think the cause of that is? crap connection? 4 bars on HSPA, not too bad i presume

dude, the thing is my latencies arent terrible, my titan panel says round 700ms, but casting fireball, the little time bar doesnt appear immediately, and us mages are squishy, cant take damage, and need to time spells well.

with edge, i have worse latencies, but way more stable, i.e. my timebar for my fireball shows immediately, but worse latency, that and DC alot, using edge and 3g.

but yes, i must say my latency does lokk better with new patch, but dcing every 10 min remains, i would rather have bad latency than dc every 10 min.

cuz with bad latency, but stable-ish connection, i cud use gamemax, at there R69 PM. dont like the pricing, but im desparate, haha

Before the 3.0.2 wotlk patch, i got round 400 - 600ms after that I got the same 300-2000ms lag thing. I also have around 4 bars vodacom HSDPA

Tell me, do you get disconnected when you venture into a main city like Stormwind or Ironforge? That's when i get dc because of the amount of players in the town.

Like I previously said tho, with this new 3.0.8.9506 patch my latencies are way way lower... I'll see how it is tonight and tomorrow night and keep you updated.

Sounds good :), im going to play tonight and see what happens. The patch that came out yesterday helps my latency, but not dcing.

Anachronos, and you? i cant put a vodacom sim into my 3g modem thingy, right??

Well that depends, If you have a newer usb modem, you can they not network locked. I'm on EU Hellscream so btw...

I remember the older PCMCIA cards are network locked tho.... Other wise you can take your modem to a mtn store and have it unlocked. Vodacom unlocked my older one when i swapped between MTN and Vodacom. Vodacom is better for me imo where I stay.

yes, by the looks of things, it aint bout what SP the best, seems to relate to the area, altough, vodacom, i heard, is more congested, but obviously BS. il try vodacom tonight and report tomorrow

yeah sure would be interesting to see the difference. Also, come visit on hellscream would also be cool to see what ping you get. Good luck

Well, I've posted a similar post on the MTN 3G thread but here it goes.

So I logged on to WoW last night, got pings of about 350 - 400 (I took some screens gna post it later). This was like a mirage to me. At first I thought the ping system was bugged and only showed a low latency, it's then when I headed into stormwind to see what's going down.

I don't think stormwind has ever been so full, or maybe it was and I just got dcd before the players appeared on my screen :D Anyways, my latency stayed consistent, and everything responded quickly. I really want to know whats going on, I mean how did my latency go from 1200-2500ms lag to 300-700 max? Not that I'm complaining at all, I'm considering canceling my adsl order, I just really wanna know what changed?

yeah, last night was quite playable, hit between 600-1200ms, and not as many dces, got up a lvl :) So yea, things looking on the brighter side, our server was also extremely full.

I've been having huge latency problems (3000ms+) since the launch of the expansion, saw people talking about the latency improvement on this forum so I downloaded the latest patch this morning just to test it, latency running below 500ms most of the time and never went above 650ms on my VC 3G. :)

Whatever they changed made a huge difference. Mailed Blizzard just to see if I can get some technical info about what was changed that might be causing the improvement on latency. Still waiting on feedback but I'll let you guys know once I know what's going on.

So then that proves it. New patch ftw... The thing is tho, ADSL users are now complaining about having higher latencies than before. How ironic, lol if it stays this way the thread head lines will soon read : Damn cant wait to install my Data card!

I'm visiting family in Rustenburg at the moment and I'm getting 400ms-800ms with the new patch. :D

I'll have to test again when I get home, but I don't think it will be this good there. Seeing as my download speed here is about 200KB/s while it's 80KB/s at home. :o

Well i havnt got such good latencies in 4 months, am getting 400 - 550 max

But today, it seems like its stuck on the 1000 ms mark again :(

Saturday did seem to have higher latency, it still was less than 1000ms except in Stormridge were it was over 4500ms. :o

But for normal play it's still allot better than the 1200ms-5000ms I was getting. I just hope to get the same results when I'm home again :o

So you obviously have better coverage in Rustenburg then? im playing on HSPA with reasonable coverage on MTN, 70%ish and i get dc, with crappy latency all the time, does HSPA suck for wow? cause, i have no coverage on HSDPA. I thinking maybe something is wrong with my MTN USB modem.

Until then, i play at my work, after hours
