LATENCY!!!

Morning everyone,

I'm running a follow up with our Network Engineers this morning to have further feedback from the progress made about the latency. I've also dropped Will@Mweb a PM so we can try and work something out together.
Two heads are better than one :)

Good to hear. This really needs to be fixed soon.

Noticed last night my lines been downgraded from 6mb to 4mb again.

I really hope this isn't their 'solution' (downgrade everyone who's reporting latency problems...)

yup - You need to make 100% sure that the techie taking the call understands not to touch your line speed based off the SNR and ATT values. Ive had to get them to record that just so the second tier techies dont try that as well.

Guess its another week another headache for us...

Was just phoned back on my service fault, by a more senior person at Clarinche. He didn't volunteer any information or admit to any backhaul problem and could only speak for the Clarinche exchange. However, he did say that they were aware of congestion on the exchange but that this was a best effort ADSL, so no latency/speed guarantees (usual). He also said that the area has one of the highest ADSL concentrations in the country but that any infrastructure upgrade would be decided by Head Office. Seems like the affected exchanges feed into Barrack St in town so maybe the problem is there. The only thing he could offer me was to try and move me to a quieter dslam.

Best effort service my ass - Yes its best effort in terms of bandwidth total, IE 4mb... not best effort interms of latency... thats absolute BS and im pretty sure that thats not what that clause means.

Just downgrade everyone to 4mb already, ffs....

I just called Telkom for the 20th time - and surprise surprise the operator says everything at the Rondebosch exchange is 100%. This is completely ridiculous.

Noticed last night my lines been downgraded from 6mb to 4mb again.

I was very lucky to get a clued up techie when I was trying to sort this out on Saturday. He moved me from 6 meg to 4 meg to 512k, and when there was no improvement he was quite happy to put it back to the 6 meg profile.

To Will and Jeff, thanks for the help. Us "little guys" would have a much harder time getting this sorted out without you!

Somethings broken and Telkom don't know how to fix it, or they've greedily over-subscribed the network and now they're too cheap to upgrade it.

But I have a hard time thinking it's because of an over-congested network - Uncapped has been out for several months now, and ISPs throttle uncapped so it's not the new line speeds either.

Also, its not like our latencies have been slowly creeping up over the months - it was literally a case of one day fine, the next terrible...

joe this happened at the exact same time as the 10mb roll outs. I think because of the contention rations in our area, we are the only ones really feeling this. And the move to upgrade everything to 10mb made the issue evident, my thoughts anyway. Suddenly we had almost double the mount of b/w if you cross reference the CINX graphs according to when the uncapped accounts came out and our 10mb upgrades. As soon as the B/w usage reaches 200mb/s, the latency grows. Seems to be everyday at the same times, so theres a clear trend.

I think telkom underestimated the effect of the upgrades on the network infrastructure in our area specifically because of the ADSL penetration. All we can hope is that they are doing something quickly to resolve.

At this point id have to excuse myself from the Telkom Do Gaming Online championships because of the latency issue, almost half our Bc2 team has the same issue :\

It is sad:(

I am going to downgrade my 4mb to 384k until this is resolved, I dont see the benefit of pay over R400 on a line that isnt working at its maximum. Maybe all of this will be a blessing in disguise and after a couple of months everyone will be on 10mb and low latency, but at the moment it is extremely iritating and makes you feel like quit gaming altogether.

I think it is right in saying that Telkom under-estimated the Southern Suburbs network, possibly needing to test all of this before implementing it. I am sure that they did have virtual tests etc, but the announcement of 10mb was at a very similar time to the annoucement of Uncapped, so there rollout and timiing was just was just wrong in a way.

Remember the ordinary person with 4mb used to have 2/3GB per month and now they are on uncapped, so averaging maybe 20GB>> So you basically taking all bandwidth from prior "uncapped era" and mulitplying it by 10. So it could be that telkom obviously didnt calculate properly

Wont you still have the same latency issue with 384? I tested my sisters connection (384), its also FUBAR.

Only solution I can think of is ISDN

Thing is only games are effected, downloads are still at max.. So im basically paying for a 4mb for downloading new series and playing some Lord of the rings online... cant play Bc2 though.. Would hate to drop to 384, with 3 users in my house... would be dead slow.

Latency has a major impact when you are browsing a page with a lot of small images, since each one has to be fetched from the server, and there is a limit to how many links TCP/IP allows you to open at once.

true, theres no doubt a clear effect on browsing.. but this effect is negligible to the average user, and pages do load so most assume there is no issue there.

Yeh it affects 384k, but I am not paying for 4mb + uncapped just for downloading. Thats like R1000 for nothign, compared to 384k uncapped + line is around R350
