LATENCY!!!

i dont know if observatory has been mentioned yet, but my friend is having the same problem. his line is laggy from 8am-5pm though... http://i.imgur.com/q3I3S.png if i remember correctly thats how mine started, and it just got worse and worse over time. i predict his graph will look as bad as the rondebosch one in a month or two if nothing is done.

peTer: That's a very interesting graph. Observatory is not in the Southern Suburbs, and seems to have congestion at different times of the day from all the other graphs posted on this thread.

Quite likely users in the CBD who complained have related (but not identical) pattern (I don't recall any graphs from the CBD). Presumably there are several ESRs in Cape Town, each of which is getting overloaded as traffic increases.

Ok just spoke to Telkom and they have finally rectified the problem.Apparently the latency switch was on high latency iso low latency.

Humour is a good alternative to conspiracy theories, which would otherwise flourish in a situation such as this...

Rondebosch is where the ESR in question is living. Clareinch, Wynberg, etc. all terminate on the Rondebosch ESR2. Somewhere between Rondebosch and Barrack Street the problem with the latency exists - most likely Telkom have not enough capacity between Rondebosch and Barrack Street - there was some mention here that there will be a maintenance window for Telkom to bump the circuit speed.

Interesting information! But, if you know this, how come Telkom are stonewalling everybody with BS explanations, or denying that there is even a problem??

There is plenty of fiber in the Southern Suburbs and CBD, so it must be a lack of routers that is constraining capacity...

To my surprise it look great. looks like i got a upgrade aswell.

Calix, which exchange are you on, I'm currently testing from work in claremont. I'm on Rondebosch Belmont at home though.

Last i heard which was yesterday . Im on crawford 4 and to my knowledge that one is not upgraded to 10mb yet. but it seems im on 6mb atm. im in rondebosch east.

Maybe all the logged calls paid off. One of my clients in rondebosch also tested line now and also getting great speeds and pings.

Hope it stays this way.!!!!!!

During the day on Crawford Exchange my latency and speeds are Max. Wait till the afternoon before celebrating coz thats when the *hit hits the Fan

I know.. Will have to wait for the afternoon to early evening to actually celebrate. interesting that im on 6mb tho.. jpmonster what you syncing at?

Its after 10am, and my graph is still flat! Could this be for real??

Will: Any feedback from the ISPs?

Update: The CINX graph is at 400Mbps, which is much higher than it normally is before the latency starts to spike:

We can certainly breathe a sigh of relief, but its way too soon to celebrate until we have an explanation of what exactly was wrong, an admission that there was a problem, and an assurance that it won't happen again!

P.S. I'm still synching at 7Mbps (that theory doesn't hold water...)

an explanation we might get as to what was wrong. An admission maybe and and assurance of not happnin again - highly unlikely we will get that.
All to do know is wait and see what happens for the rest of today and tonight.
I did get info from the guy that called me when he was at the exchange and what he said is that it was the fact that they were moving users around on diffrent exchanges(as to putting to many on 1 exchange at a time) while they were working on trying to fix some bugs that was encountered during the upgrades. How true this is, I do not know but at least its something.

@Will , is this the possible case as to what was happning? I know there was congestion but if its cause they were moving ppl around then they should of at least let the users know or even the ISPs know what they doing.

Bad news - this might be because IS is experiencing national problems with their adsl right now.

But cinx looks normal ?!!? I'm going to stick with the hope that our problem is fixed.

It could easily be a combination of slightly reduced traffic (remember that the CINX graph is NOT the same as the ADSL traffic), plus some tinkering with DSLAM and ESR configuration.

Keep monitoring, and hope for the best...

I just noticed some packet loss at the 5th hop stage (CINX), but perfectly normal at 3rd hop level...

Fingers crossed. Want to play some CoD/BC2 tonight!

Can someone post their ping times for the last 12 hours?

I just remoted to Home PC and latency is 35ms. my speedtest is the same

Just a note: last night at bout 7:30 my line dropped then came back on .. 10 min later it reset again and came back.. after that my ping stayed at 10ms to newlands . Could play cod all nite :)
Could of been they were busy with it then already. Still looking good atm but keeping fingers crossed .

PS: thats good news for now JP.. lets see if it holds up. Oh and where in rondebosch are you?
