LATENCY!!!

Also late joining this thread but I've also got latencies of around 150-180ms locally during the day and then it calms down late at night. It really is getting very frustrating. I'm staying in The Claremont (021 - 671).

Tonight there was no latency issue at all. The first day in 1 week. Was all below 35ms

Me too, at around 37. Nice and steady for a change. But between 12pm to about 4pm I had a rough patch - including about 40 minutes at 500 from 1:30pm and then again for about 20 minutes at 3pm!!

HI jpmonster

My experience is that it tends to settle down over the weekend. I have been promised feedback during next week as to a potentially wide area issue affecting the Southern Suburbs area.

@teRRRier our own Cape Town network is also beginning to 'settle' now with peering links etc coming online so over and above the Telkom latency you should have seen a better experience last night.

We're having the same problems in the Cape Town CBD area.During weekdays from about 9am - 6pm when businessess are online latency is sky high.Night time and weekends fine though.Seems to be only on the 10meg lines though.

@absynth if you can provide some examples of the issue as per the other discussion in this thread we might be able to get it some attention.

Thanks [email protected]'ll have to wait till Monday to do a trace, cause like I said its only during business hours.Just want to check that you dont mind, eventhough i'm not an MWEB subscriber?

I'm still getting rather slow latency to Europe (400ms on Saturday afternoon).

I notice a big jump of traffic on the CINX traffic graph since Friday:

Is this anything to do with MWeb's Cape Town network, or is this related to the simultaneous TENET traffic spike?

I just checked my log and the wheels fell off for me at almost exactly 1:30 this afternoon. It's as sluggish as a sea cucumber again right now. I just had a look at that cinx traffic link - that's a massive jump - check the Last 30 days graph. Caramba!

Will@MWEB mentioned a couple of weeks ago that there is a Telkom routing between hops 2 and 3 which doesn't reflect on a trace route. I think it's the old 196.43.8.190 (Telkom) that was always showing up as the latency bandit. When Mweb started routing via the Cape Town IPC link it didn't show up as a hop anymore.

The problem still appears to be mainly Claremont, Newlands, Wynberg, Plumstead, Kenilworth, etc.

I think the problem here is the local loop - until it's unbundled and we have competitors (sometime in 2011 but don't hold your breath), or Telkom spends some money on upgrading the southern suburbs now, I don't think we are going to see any improvement.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was a pickup in 3G products as a result, especially if this is going to last for a long time. Latency may be worse than adsl but much better than what we are seeing now.

@acidrain

The 3rd hop is our Cape Town core router, but what you don't see are the Telkom back haul hops that occur in between leaving your ADSL router and reaching it.

Look at this comparative test that was taken from our ADSL test bench this afternoon. At the same time I was seeing about 150ms on the 3rd hop :

Tracing route to 41.185.60.18 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 2 ms <1 ms <1 ms login.router [10.0.0.2]
2 * * * Request timed out.
3 15 ms 14 ms 15 ms 196-28-178-202.adsl.mweb.co.za [196.28.178.202]
4 15 ms 14 ms 14 ms 196-28-178-133.adsl.mweb.co.za [196.28.178.133]
5 16 ms 16 ms 16 ms 198.32.214.45
6 16 ms 16 ms 15 ms vl40.cr.gw.cpt.za.wa.co.za [41.185.0.97]
7 16 ms 16 ms 16 ms 41.185.60.18
Trace complete.

Based on what I've been following in this discussion and evidence I've gathered from my side taking comparative readings from our Test Bench in the call center I suspect that there is an issue covering at very least the following 4 exchanges:

ClareInch
Rondebosch
Wynberg
Crawford

I've put this all into a fault report and have been promised feedback during the course of next week.

Kind Regards
Will

LOL!

It would be extremely unprofessional and politically incorrect of me to respond to that :)
