LATENCY!!!

SIGH. anyway, i tried the free ping graph tool and i cant get it to save a complete graph (it only saves the portion that is displayed). i cant find a way to zoom out to see a whole day. could we not just form a kind of petition with each person submitting a ping and/or tracert sample (using cmd), and a brief description of the problem, and our area and phone codes. we know we all have the same problem and it seems like they just need the complaint in numbers to prove that it is a real problem. we can include some graphs where available, but i think its going to be hard to get a lot of graphs. but we can get a lot of ping tests with descriptions like "my ping is ****ing high from about 8am untill 12am and it has been this way for 1.5 months, since the 10meg upgrades. ive been downgraded to 4meg and its not helping."

Hi Peter, bomb the mailbox with whatever you're able to put together, a tracert or ping twice a day if need be, or just take a screenshot if it wont export the graph. Believe me no-one is more frustrated than me about this right now as I've essentially been asked to provide the troubleshooting data that should be readily available to their engineers, but if this is what it takes to cut through excuses then so be it.

PS this request is open to all-comers, not just MWEB subscribers.

*Still the SAME issue.

Rofl. As I post the above I check my connection and there is SOME improvement. I am using HLSW which reports latencies for local game servers and this is what it's telling me:

SGS servers back to normal pings. I'm getting about 40-50.

Any game server NOT on Saix (Wage/Igaming/IS) is sitting between 150 and 200.

Maybe this info will help:

Ping -t www.mweb.co.za 130-180 ms
Ping -t www.telkom.co.za 150-180 ms
Ping -t games.saix.net 150-180 ms

Still bloody weird, HLSW is reporting my pings to the actual games servers at SGS as below 50... Gonna test it by actually connecting to one.

I'm in Claremont and have experienced this problem from roughly when this thread started. Only in the past week did I come across this thread. I have spent much time with both Telkom and my ISP to no avail. I have tested with accounts from Axxess, Afrihost and SAIX. Same problem across all 3. I have been monitoring this thread on a daily basis due to others experiencing the same problem and because of the involvement of Will and Jeff. Thanks for taking the time to get involved in this issue guys. It's a huge amount of positive PR for your respective companies.

In light of what you guys have done, I will be changing ISP's at the end of this month. The best my ISP could achieve in 22 days of my dealing with them, was to blame shaping on my account, due to my usage, as the reason for this occurring. I wasn't truly angry with them until today. They took 9 days to respond to me only to yet again claim that it is shaping. Not once did they explain how shaping can suddenly make my ping go from 40ms to 200/300ms as opposed to previous months' ping of 40ms when being shaped. They clearly never looked further into this issue. The extent of their investigation was to look at my bandwidth usage. The extent of their solution was to blame me.

I had a fallout with MWEB a few months ago and swore I would never go near them, but in light of the actions taken by their staff, and WA's, to rectify this issue on behalf of all other ISP's users, I feel that they have done more than redeem their company and are owed a personal thank you. Thanks guys for actually taking the time to listen to people's issues and to then search for solutions.

Been having crap'ish latency since about 2 days back, 110ms average on local pings.

ISP's: Afrihost & Imaginet.

Ok. This just in from my side. My pings have returned to normal on SGS servers, however, I am getting large packet loss compared to what I used to get. This is still a vast improvement from my 150-200 ping on SGS servers a couple of days ago.

Can anyone else confirm what their ping is like on SGS (any game should do) with a Telkom account.

I am assuming Telkom are busy fixing their own **** first, and are basically just trying to keep the other ISPs busy while they do so.

@zolly These problems are too low level for them to only target SAIX customers with a fix - I don't recall which exchange you're on?

I'm on Clareinch. If you need me to I can PM you my number.

Thanks Ravid - can you graph and mail please if you get the time.

I've been running pingplotter for the last hour (its much more flexible than the one Will suggested).

I'm getting very smlar graphs to teRRRier, so I assumed this excercise would be a bit pointless.

However, I discovered that there is a setting to show min/max ping times for every plot on the chart. This shows that latency (jitter) is much worse than I expected. The average is consistent around 150ms, but frequent spikes up to 300ms occur about once a minute.

Corrrection: Most of the jitter is between hop 4 and 5 (tenet.cinx.net.za), which is not where the primary congestion occurs.

I will keep monitoring during the evening, but here is my first graph.

Edit: Sorry, I hadn't figured out how to use this forum's direct uploads.

@zolly Please do - in fact it would really help a lot if you mailed the gmail I put up above with a ping graph - even if its just a few hours worth. I'm a bit puzzled as you seem to be having a slightly different experience to everyone else on Clareinch.

I'll get on it in a few minutes. Just starting supper :p

@Gordon yep and that's been getting steadily worse, which is a place just north of Hell for the gamers. You can actually sort of play on a 150ms ping, but not on one thats bouncing around like that.

This problem is crazy. Obviously Telkom doesn't have a frekkin clue.

In my quest to map the problem I did happen upon something very, err interesting... a couple of the IP addresses in my traceroute have unencrypted telnet ports open. Somebody has not been configuring routers properly :-)

Hey Will,

Can't find that e-mail address. Can you PM it to me so I can send you my info and some screenshots I've taken so far?
