LATENCY!!!

it seems like people are experiencing this problem in areas where 10meg upgrades occurred, however we are on different exchanges and have different ping graphs (for each exchange?) and different amounts of high pings and packet loss. could be that they should never have upgraded anyone above 4meg in the first place and none of the exchanges can really handle it?

trouble shooting:
question 1) is everyone on a single exchange experiencing the same pings throughout the day?
question 2) is everyone with high latency on an exchange where 10meg upgrades occured?
question 3) if telkom were to put everyone back on 4meg (as a 24 hour test maybe) we could see if that solves it. something tells me thats the problem and solution right there.

I am not on the same exchanges as the rest. I am on Crawfords Exchange and on 4mb, actually at 3mb. Pings are bad throughout the day. It isnt only restricted to 4/10mb users/384 guys are experiencing the same problem

yeah, but is there anyone on the crawfords exchange who got the 10meg upgrade? tbh i dont know how exchanges work, it just makes sense that if the latency issues started when the 10 meg upgrades occured then it can probably be easily reversed if telkom would be so kind.

Yes, my graph is almost identical to teRRRier (minute for minute!) We are both on Clareinch, although on different DSLAM's AFAIK.

Unusually early drop off tonight (from about 10:15) - I'm almost back to normal

Updated: Hmnpf! Should have kept my mouth shut. I've cursed it right back up again. http://www.imagehost.co.za/share-DF2C_4CC1FF55.html

I also noticed the temporary drop off at 10pm, though my graph doesn't go much beyond that point.

Currently averaging 190ms here, spiking to 400's. Saturday afternoon last weekend was a clear spot for me. Considering reverting to turn-based gaming with plastic pieces and dice...

Last Saturday was the Currie Cup semi-final at Newlands. Today the activity schedule for most people is probably rather different...

Will: Most of those spikes are total latency to the destination site (including MWeb's IPC). For me latency to the 3rd hop is running at 120-180ms, with no spikes outside this range. This is 'steady', but not good. Packet loss is very high, which may show as spikes...

is this planned telkom maintenance for the purpose of resolving these issues with latency or something else?

Hopefully it is.

@peter, Crawford exchange is not 10mb capable, well that was what the Telkom Techy said to me, although for the since before the "said" upgrades i use to get speedtests of around 6-7mb and when the upgrades started happening I was down to 3.5:(

what planned telkom maintenance???

@ EVERYONE please will you phone telkom and harass them about the problem (do so again, if you already have) until they do something about it.

phone:
10217 option 2, then 3
and 08600 375375
and 10212

get put through to a technion or manager if possible.
tell them there is are latency issues and packet loss in all the areas where 10 meg upgrades occurred 2 months ago. its an ongoing and widespread problem which started at the beginning of october and is affecting 100s of people. 1) are they aware of the problem? 2) what is the cause? 3) how are they planning to fix it and when will it be fixed? 4) if all else fails suggest that the 10 meg upgrades caused the problems and demand they downgrade everyone back to 4 meg (at least temporarily to see if it helps).

@ Will and Jeff... i assume you guys have contacts higher up at telkom since u are big ISPs and have to work with those evil bastards a lot. if not, then im sure theres someone at your ISP who deals with telkom directly. tell them to get their **** together and sort this ****ing **** out NOW!!!

Hi peTer

Rolling back from the infrastructure changes they've made for 10mb would be a mammoth undertaking and would cause a whole lot of problems on it's own. I am in daily contact with Telkom and have been providing them with all of the data gathered by the users in this thread to show them the full extent of the problem and how many people it's affecting.

I do agree though that it certainly can't hurt for individual users to raise their own fault logs and push for a resolution.

Kind Regards
Will

are you just saying that because mweb now have that really expensive 10 meg uncapped product? i really dont understand, they upgraded everyone to 10 meg in a really short period of time, no questions asked. so why would it be a mammoth undertaking to do the reverse? what problems would it cause? personally i think it would solve all our problems.

Is there not some option to create something that ping sensitive customers can be switched to at the cost of the "10 meg capable" piece of $#%^ I've got right now?

Anyone know if ISDN is affected, because that seriously an option for me right now...

LOL...For all the users out there struggling with latency there are plenty more on 6/8/10MB lines having a ball and if they read what you just asked they would probably turn you into their bitc*

can you prove it? i havent personally come across anyone with a working 6+ meg line. im pretty sure based on the evidence and people i have personally asked that there are more laggy lines in rondebosch than there are proper working 6+ meg lines. sure it would be best if telkom fixed it so we can all have working 10meg, but i honestly dont think they are going to do that any time soon. the next best thing is to revert (rondebosch atleast) back to how it was. but i stand to be corrected. id be interested to hear if anyone knows of a lot of working 6+ meg lines. or any in rondebosch for that matter.
