Would be interesting to see what kind of scams / phishing / sim swapping attempts people have these days.

I don't get them Had an interesting one last night...

"MTN" phoned telling me that a certain Mr John Doe (cannot remember the name used) is requesting sim swap permission. I told person, no that is not me, please make sure not to do a sim swap. Next moment, he asks to verify that it's me, by quoting a 4 pin OTP that he supposedly sent - instant red flag, so I hung up.
They would have had access to my MTN account if I gave it to them. Not sure what they could have done with it if I gave them the OTP since it's a prepaid sim card, but still very scary.

It probably means they have details of some of your online accounts including banking. Check for suspicious activity on your account and change the passwords. Also try using a 2FA method which doesn't rely on SMS.

an interesting one I got was from Pepcell in springs, call me up saying they have a contract phone they want to deliver to Mr XYZ, but that isnt me,

I call them back and tell them its a scam,

Getting calls from "Customs" at Bloemfontein International airport about some package being sent or being received.
What worries me is they have your correct ID number

They have everything, I got a call from "SARS" few years ago, apparently I owed them money.
They had my email registered with sars, ID, address.

Red flag was when they wanted to email me details of account to which I should pay the money.
Just for kicks I asked them to send me statement, you could see that it was doctored.

Not really a scam but last week SWAMBO went to KBH, parked car but could not lock it.
It seems that parking is fertile ground for jamming.
Security was not there so she just moved car and locked but question is how many people fall for it especially knowing that some could be in stressed state or rush.

Every now and then I get an sms saying I need to pay my Netflix subscription or I will be cut off.

Whattsapp account hijacking on the increase. Various scams that end in you receiving an otp that they ask for as confirmation.

Scams range from Takealot call centre offering discount codes to someone wanting to add you to neighborhood security group etc.

Had a co worker click on a sus link last week, Sim swop done, whatsapp taken over

They stared chatting to her contacts asking for R500-R1500 that they would then pay back over the weekend. Everything via Absa cash something or another
in 2hours, they hit up around 40 contacts. Sim swop was reversed (I didnt know they could), and the sms's started coming in, atleast 10 sent money

Asked her, What the ****? you click rando links?

This site (koodooco.co.za) looks like a scam copy of koodoo.co.za with crazy cheap prices.

Got a call on a sunday at 19:55, from "MTN JHB", about some or other draw promotion, it was so damn noisy on their side could barely make out WTF the guy was waffling on about. It wasn't from MTN's usual fixed number range. It was a 073. So my guard was immediately up. There is no company that I am aware of that will phone you on a Sunday night, let alone nearly 8pm, from some draw or promotion.

Anyway, decided to play the fool with this mofo as long a possible, gave him some random thumb suck information, told him to hang on the cat is the room and proceeded to loudly talk with the cat for the next few seconds, then talking loud to my self. Was at my pc, and quickly switched on my sound system, put him on loudspeaker, told him I am back, and he should listen to this I think it is cool, then proceeded to play him this.

Eventually gave up when he knew the gig was up.

Promptly blocked number and continued to enjoy the rest of the song. Might have been an Indian call centre, who knows, but he started losing his cool, kept on saying listen here, listen here.

Wasted a good 10 mins, reported the number to mtn fraud as well.

Crafty little fckers.

this happened to me last week, they were ver insistent telling me how bad ti could be if mr XYZ swaps my SIM. so I told them not to do the SIM swap - seemed to confuse them. Recounting this incident to a service agent at the MTN shop apparently the MO is to trigger the OTP and get you to read out the OTP for the MTNZA app and move you airtime, rewards points etc etc

Marketplace scams.
Seen a huge uptick in stolen Playstations being sold.
a.) Get scammed by sending a "deposit" or payment sent in full with a fake courier package sent to you.
b.) Actually receive the playstation and it gets blacklisted by Sony months after it was sold to you.

Yeah, people still pay deposits. Idiots.

Stolen stuff on Marketplace is rife. As stereotypical as it sounds, if you buy something from an African guy, and they show up 3 in a Uber it's stolen or broken.
