Laurens Cloete is currently Acting Executive Director of the CSIR Meraka Institute. The Meraka Institute is the largest organisation in South Africa dedicated to ICT R&D and its vision is to accelerate South Africa’s development towards an advanced information society, where everyone can create, access, utilise and share information and knowledge to their individual and collective benefit.
Cloete holds an M.Eng (Electronics) degree from the University of Pretoria. His postgraduate studies were focussed on computer aided design of integrated circuits using a novel optimisation algorithm for very large scale CMOS integrated circuits. He plays an active role in enabling vibrant R&D collaboration with local and international research institutions and multinational companies to promote the development and application of information and communications technology for social and economic development in South Africa and Africa.
Cloete is also the vice chair person of the SoftstartBTI software incubator board and chairman of the steering committee of the World Bank funded Southern African mLab.
