Guys,

I need an electric lawnmower for about 5000m2 land.

I'll have my guy cut portions per day so I don't want to buy an expensive one, but I'm not on a budget and I dont mind spending if you tell me the mower is rock solid and worth the buy.

TIA

For that size you probably want something like this

Yes ,if I was cutting the grass.

But for the gardener, no fkin way.

He'll break that thing in no time.

The question is if you trust him with a petrol lawn mower.

Smaller gardens, always electric as pretty much no service, but with a much larger garden going petrol is way nicer.

Incline is important, if it's a hill property you want something with self propeller.

If he comes often enough, you probably want to go the mulcher route if you can, the grass clippings are a good fertilizer.

If you go the mulcher route, and with self propelling, you want to get something around the 140cc, more than that is overkill for most.

Hi,

thanks for your input.

Problem with a petrol mower is it needs a service every now and then.

The cost sometimes does not justify the repair/service.

I have free power while the sun is out so an electric mower can make use of this.

Personally I would look at one of the locally made electric mowers like Tandem, Wolf, Trimtech etc. You can usually find cheap spares for them like replacement blades, capacitors, bosses, wheels, switches, pigtails etc. I think you need at least a 2200W motor for the size of that garden. Go and look at a specialist lawnmower shop in your area to see what brands they are selling and then search online for a good price. These shops tend to avoid selling the cheaper brands that could be unreliable and difficult to find spares for in the future.

The cost of damaged extension cords is going to outweigh your cost of fuel and maintenance :p

They're really easy to maintain, it will take you no more than 30 minutes every 6 months :) Change the spark plug once a year for around R50

A few L of 93 per month vs 2.5kw load on your batteries and inverters...

Good point, but....

I have panels to generate 70kWh so 2.5kw is a piece of cake.

I am quite adamant on giving an electric mower a shot.

Not really. Just need to check oil and service it once every 2y or so and then it's only oil and plug and air filter.
Only thing that really goes is the carb.

For that size mowing with a cable is a pain - go petrol.

The yellow electric Tandems are overpriced on Takealot. Should cost a good R1000 to 1.5k cheaper at an agent (before lockdown, hope it's still the same).

Most lawnmower places will tell you for that size lawn to go with petrol, but im with you on going electric based on concerns of someone else using it.
I have approx1000sq lawn, and based on what i have used over the years i would recommend either tandem or wolf (last I heard same company now). I use the 2600w machines but its a bit of a pain to get 16a outdoor/heavy duty extension cords and there are restrictions on maximum safe length.
I have the helper cut max 30 mins at a time with a break in between to keep the machine from overheating.

Thanks for the advice guys

I do have plug points outside my walls and even at the boundary I have.

I am going to be renovating soon so will add many more plugs all over.

I am going to look at the Tandem and Wolf range for a start.

I bought an electric mower in 1976. Magnum was the brand. It is still going now in 2020. ONE cut cord incident in all these years.
It is about training and that is all. Blades replaced every three years, sharpened every year at end of season.

The capacitor on the motor is showing signs of needing replacement and the auto trip now kicks in after 45 minutes of continuous cutting. FEMCO motor 1800W
The wheels have been replaced once. The grass catcher once. The power handle switch once. The cord is 30 m long. Still original with the one joint.
Looks battered but still functional.

Wolf electric lawnmower, on an incredibly long extension cord that I ordered, has been going for decades, just had blade sharpening or replacement when needed.
