Lawyers' Roll being audited

Many prominent advocates do not appear on the justice department's lawyers' roll, Beeld newspaper reported on Wednesday.

A search by the Afrikaans daily revealed that the names of lawyers, such as Jeremy Gauntlett SC, Barry Roux SC, Johann Engelbrecht SC, and Paul Fick SC, did not appear on the roll of appointed advocates.

Beeld said apparently the justice department had been battling for the past 19 years to get all the lawyers' names reflected accurately on the roll.

This was because it was destroyed in 1996 when the department's IT system crashed.

Before the electronic roll, the names were kept in a book but the book had also disappeared.

Lawyers had been asked to resend their names and admission certificates to the department but this process had not been completed.

Justice department spokesman advocate Mthunzi Mhaga -- whose name was not on the roll either -- told Beeld the department was auditing the roll.

A lot of them have budgets but they get spent on stuff they don't need or things get bought and wasted. While I agree that some departments are struggling for budgets I have seen many departments with hardware still in boxes, bought years ago and never having been implemented. Most often it's either waste or incompetence.

They could have a budget for IT services but instead they spend their money on fake awards, parties, staff vehicles and expensive food.

In my experience state IT departments are **** sandwiches. Competent and skilled mid level staff who are really good at what they do, but with political appointee managers and bureaucrats, and BEE welfare lower level staff that break your will to live.

We could, if it didn't cost the taxpayer R140 million and twenty million for simple wordpress websites. The only fair thing to admit to is we have a lot of corrupt incompetents running the show.

I know for a fact that Sita's budget goes into the billions of Rands every year. Then a couple more billions from the security clusters that does not get reported publicly.

The problem is the red tape everywhere. I'm working for a company that's busy implementing systems in the SAPS buildings and it's taking SITA more than a year to authorise the installation/upgrade of extra power to the rooms. It's all political bull**** in the end.

The budgets are huge but nothing ever gets spent in the end because everyone's always filling in forms which then get lost, not authorised or whatever other lame excuse. Quite sad really.

I don't agree. If they do not have the budget then they should not look at IT then as a solution. If I do not have money for a car the last thing I'm going to do is try and buy a Porsche.

If the budget is not there then revert to the next best thing even if that means pen and paper. They've had 18 years to create a new book and or record. You want to tell me that they could not do anything in 18 years.....
