How big a diffirence will there be between a LCD monitor with a contrast ratio of 800:1 and one of 2000:1

Is it worth it to fork out another R 800 for the same lcd but with a better contrast ratio of 2000:1 ?

Thanks

put them side by side - you wont even see a difference i think....

Im looking at a 20" Dell monitor with a ratio of 800:1.
So you say I should rather go for 2000:1 ?

Avoid the Dell monitor - we have Plenty of these at work with same contrast ratio. However, we've also recently got a several Samsung 743NX 17" monitors with 7000:1 - WOW they are nice - so if you're going to spend, spend a little more and get yourself a Samsung 20" equivalent - well worth the cash!!!!!!!

I think he's saying 800 and 2000 are so close, that you won't notice a difference and it's not worth the extra R800 ...

Contrast ratios are a big marketing tool by the manufacturers and one that is not easy for consumers to grasp. Essentially, this is the measurement of the difference in brightness from the darkest to brightest portion on the screen. The problem is that this measurement will vary throughout the screen. This is due to the slight variations in the lighting behind the panel. Manufacturers will use the highest contrast ratio they can find on a screen, so its somewhat deceptive. Basically a higher contrast ratio will mean that the screen will tend to have deeper blacks and brighter whites.

Also, are you sure that neither spec is a dynamic contrast ratio? Dynamic contrast ratio is pretty much a useless quantity (see The_Techie's hardware faq), much like today's PMPO power ratings

I don't think that you should go for the higher contrast ratio unless you're a graphics designer or something.

OK Thanks people.
If not Dell, what other makes are the best? LG or Samsung?

How much for the 800:1 20" Dell? Where would you buy from?

Don't think you can go wrong with Samsung. Perhaps a 22"? ;)

The contrast ratio of LCD's is just a advertising gimmick. Had 2 LCD's one Proline (800) and a LG (2000) and I couldnt see the diffs.

+1 for the Samsung
