Hi Hemps

Thanks for the mention of P&G Digital. After you mentioned their name I went looking on the Sony Website Store Locator and found one in Benoni

They did me an awesome deal on the HDDW5500, even cheaper than the Sony Store in Eastgate plus they through in a free DVD Player. I am still waiting for Sony Eastgate to get stock
 
Just wanted to let you all know that I know have gotten my Bravia 40" S - Series LCD and HDDW5500 Home Entertainment System

Thanks to everyone who gave me their advice, I really appreciate it

I spent the whole Saturday crawling around in my roof running wires :->

Now just to set everything up properly. Expect some more question re this shortly :->
 
Ok

So now my questions about setting up begin:

  • I have an HDMI cable between my LCD and the HES Receiver. I can hear the sound but not see any picture when on SAT ( ie DSTV). I am assuming this has something to do with the fact the I don't have a HD Decoder yet but I though that the receiver would still be able to play the picture just not at HD quality? Does this have something to do with the repeater / pass through thing - I thought both would handle it though
  • I have the same problem with my Nintendo WII. I have it plugged into TV1 in on the Receiver. My LCD is for now connected to the receiver via TV1 and I am wondering if the problem is that TV1 has in and out connected? If I put the WII into TV2 in on the receiver everything works but the TV2 connection is at the front of the box which doesn't look nice
  • Is component video better than VGA. In other words the Red, green and blue cables better quality than the Yellow, Red and White?

HDMI in = HDMI out
Component in = Component out
Composite in = composite out
Example.
If you connect a blu ray via hdmi into the receiver and try out put with component to TV you
will not get no picture.
So you would need hdmi in from blu ray and hdmi out to TV to see picture and sound.
I finally setup the HT-DDGW800 and it's freakin awesome, playing Ironman blu ray copy through HTPV via single hdmi cable, power dvd decodes the tru HD sound and receiver picks it up as uncompressed lpcm, I cant go back to notmal DVD's and TV :(

HDMI/DVI - 10
Component - 9
S-Video - 6
VGA - 5
Composite - 3
 
I have a Bravia an the Vseries Panasonic (plasma) and I in my opinion plasma kicks butt. Take a look at them
 
On a side note where is a good place in Boksburg to get the various types of connection cabling?

Hi-Fi corp were not very helpful. Cats Digital were helpful but didn't have what I need. Pick 'n Pay just gave me a blank look

From what I can understand I am looking for one or more of the following

  1. s-video to s-video cable (to run from scart converter in DSTV to amp)
  2. SCART to RGB cable/converter (if this exists, composite is better than s-video)
  3. For the WII I need a converter to HDMI. Prices I have seen so far are like R400 + !!! and that was just to composite

I run my DSTV (composite) into a Philips DVD Recorder (paid R1000) with HDMI to AV receiver, these recorders are very nice (make standard dstv look better with upscaling)
The AV receiver has a single hdmi cable going to the wall mointed lcd, no clutter.
Play all my hired DVD's through it and they look great.
On the side I have a HTPC with stored DVD's, Series on 1.5 TB hard drive, HDMI video and 7.1 sound via a single HDMI cable from Graphics card to AV recevier.
The graphics card pumps video out very nicely, HD stuff looks amazing.

Clever work around.

Not sure I am wanting to spend R1K on a new DVD player to do this though seeing as that I already have 3 DVD Players :)

Plus would rather save that R1K and put it towards buying a Sony PS3 which has HD out and can play my DVD's too

I do like the idea of a Multi Media PC though. Very nice :D
 
MG-DDW5000 vs HT-DDW5500

Being what it is, deciding on what you want the system to do is probebly best before you purchase it.
As any Audio/Visual brand you get entry lvl products to high end, BOSE, SONY, PIONEER, YAMAHA ect.
Just take this into concideration...

BUT if u want exellent bang for your buck and want backup support in future, I would reccomend sony
I wont go as far as to rate any of the above systems, becuase i have not had the DDW5500. Ok here goes....

I am currently working in an BIG Audio Visual Company in SA, so i can say this with confidence... IF A COMPANY DOES PUT CERTAIN PRODUCTS ON "SPECIAL" OR WHAT EVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT... THEY ARE TRYING TO GET RID OF OLD OBSELETE STOCK, OR THEY ARE PROMO'ING A NEW RANGE.
In the case of Sony wich is probebly one of the biggest of it's kind, will rarely promo there products.

Back to the point...

I was also sitting in the middle of MG-DDW5000 vs HT-DDW5500 mess as to my company does not stock the 5500 yet, so did a little research.

In the instance where I need to use my setup I cannot get to the back of my subz so the 5500 was the best bet for me. U know having the seprerate amp can have advantages.

AND FORGET ABOUT 3D LCD... COME ON ARE YOU GOING TO WATCH TV WITH GLASSES ON ALL DAY AND WHEN YOU GO TO YOUR MATES HOUSE YOU GOING TO TAKE A SPARE PAIR OF GOGGLES WITH. PHILLIPS 3D GOGGLES COST 1500 PER PAIR, AND OUR BROADCAST CANNOT SUPPORT 1080P WHAT TO SAY ABOUT 3D. GET YOURSELF A BLURAY PLAYER AND BUY 3D MOVIES. JUST AS GOOD ON NORMAL LCD'S.
