LCD & Home Entertainment System reccommendations

One last thought here

LCD vs Plasma

The general consensus among consumers and resellers to is to buy LCD, but why

Why is LCD better than Plasma and therefore the reason for being more expensive I assume

What are the pro's and con's of LCD and Plasma

You get bigger screen for same buck. Not sure about Bravia tho.

Actually, unless you plan to use the set for HD gaming or as a stand-in pc monitor, opinion is heavily slanted towards plasma. Deeper blacks, fewer issues with ghosting, better reproduction of SD signal etc.

LCD is supposed to have a longer service life, though.

Is HD Gaming and PC use on a FULL HD Plasma problematic?

Sigh

Seems the money spending doesn't stop there

Forgot that I now have to replace my existing DSTV Dual View Decoder with a DSTV HD PVR decoder (R4000 ) Anybody know of any cheaper prices?

You would think that DSTV would accept Trade In's on old decoders for customers willing to go the HD Route

I see then that I also need some multi-switch adapter to take me existing 2 cable installation and convert it to 4 by the decoder. Once again any suggestions on where to buy this

Seeing that my dish is already up and cables in place I am definitely going to do this installation myself as opposed to paying someone else to do it

Which Home Theatre & LCD did you get mbeylis? Do you have the old PVR or the Dual View Decoder?

  • Sony Bravia - 40" - S Series
    Sony HDDW5500 Home Entertainment System

I have the Dual View Decoder, not the Standard PVR

good choice mbeylis!!

I persoanlly have:

- Sony Bravis 40" S Series
- Sony HT-DDWG800 Home Entertainment System

Honestly the best quality reasonable money can buy. Have not had a single regret!

Good to hear

Just a bit bleak about now having to upgrade my DSTV decoder too now :(

Why only channel 170 is HD so at the moment its not that important, I got my HD decoder from Makro last week they had them on special for R2999.99 think the special is finished though. It is nice to have a HD decoder but for only one channel ?

Well yeah I guess I can wait until they are on special as you rightly say that with only 1 HD Channel on DSTV at the moment its not that critical now

Just seems a shame to have all this HD technology and not really enjoy it yet. I opted out of a HD DVD player in favor of the Sony PS3 but just need to budget for that now. LCD & Home Entertainment system was a bit wee expensive

@mbeylis Don't you just love the smell that errupts when you open the box to your new kit? I hope you enjoy it very much! I am also faced with the whole DSTV situation, but by the time I upgrade my TV, I'll get the HD PVR in any case, even if it is just for one channel. We watch M-Net during prime time and a lot of the shows are simucasted on 170, so a win-win for us already.

And, not to mention that 3 new HD channels to soon to hit the waves too in the near future.

Im waiting for the new decoders... i hate the current ones....
Good or bad?

Just bought my Sony AV component system HT-DDWG800 for R5179incl Delivery.
This was recommended by av forums all over the web to the above model posted all over, hdmi repeater instead of passthrough, enabling lpcm uncompressed audio that should soon be standard with all blu ray offerings.

http://www.sony.co.za/product/CompareProducts.action?site=hp_en_ZA_i&models=HT-DDWG800&models=HT-DDW5500

The fact that the HT-DDWG800 has a Repeater and not a switch is nice but in terms of other features and looks I think I still prefer the HT-DDW5500

Also somebody correct me if I am wrong but will it not be possible to incorporate a Repeater into the HT-DDW5500

Guy did me a deal via invoice over email.
If you email [email protected]

The price of the system is R4749 and the courier charge will be R400 because of the size of the parcel.

I will send you the invoice shortly.

Kind Regards
Salomien
