I see Makro has a Sinotec 32" listed as 81cm. Is this directly comparable to the screen size of a 74cm CRT TV? I don't trust these marketing types to be measuring the same thing.

no, the panel will be wider, TV's are not wide. Panels have slightly more viewable area. So a 32" LCD is usually considered a replacement for a 74cm TV.

it's 80-81cm, so it is bigger than a 74cm .... but instead of it being a bulky crt, it's flat.

cool. just wanted to confirm the same thing was being measured.

Yeah, taking 16:9 aspect ratio into account, the screen will be about the same height as a 74cm CRT TV, but wider.

Also remember that if you watch a 4:3 channel without stretching it on a 81cm LCD it will probably be a bit smaller then on a 74cm CRT

If you have a 81/2cm TV (32"), if you watch a standard 4:3 show without stretching it, it would be the equivalent of a 64cm screen.

i'll just set DSTV to widescreen. That should do the trick shouldn't it?

The distorted, fat people trick ;)

you say it in jest.

but i have just been transcoding some of my DVDs (4:3) to 16:9 to play on my 50". no complaints with what I see.
