With regard to the optimal distance from the screen, if one can’t get the viewing point to be the exact distance, is it better to be further away of closer to the screen?

I think it depends on how far from optimum it would be. I'd go for the closest to optimum (ie, if the further-away option were closer to optimum distance than closer-to-tv-option, I'd choose the further-away option). That said, if the differences were the same, I'd go for the further-away option. Seems to help with my eyes, as well as giving the effect of better picture

All things being the same I would go for further away. You'll probable notice less pixelation effect.

Yeah. To put numbers. A 50” optimal distance is around 3.8m it would seem. So my question was whether 4m would be better than 3.6m. My unknowing mind would tend to favour being at 4m given the example above.

I agree... I would prefer 4m to 3.6m if the optimal were 3.8m because of the further-distance hypothesis postulated above.
