Howdy

Does anyone know of current specials going around on 42inch or 46inch
HDTV's 720p,1080i,1080p.

Game sells 1080i (1366x768) for around R19,000 (42inch)

you are killing me! Are you going to watch SABC1/2/3 on it? Surely if you buy 20K LCD you must have DSTV? Also, don't you have an old VHS around? You can get one for like R400-500 I guess
 
My next purchase is going to be the Sinotec 42" LCD (MP-42T26) Its at Makro for R12k and has a 5yr guarantee. Good value for money

Yeah, built in tuners are overrated. Really not necessary nowadays.
 
Just by the way ... 1366x768 DOES DISPLAY 1080i ... in fact 720p is better than 1080i. If you understand the concept of 1080i, you will know that it is interlaced, meaning for every 1 frame ... it has to show the image twice. First all the odd numbered lines and then all the even numbered lines.
So in this way ... the TV pushes the first 540 vertical lines in the first picture and then then next 540 lines in the next picture ... it does this so quickly though that it seems like a constant picture. A tv with a resolution of 1366x768 is perfectly capable of displaying 1080i because it has a resolution of 768 vertical lines, and it only needs 540 for 1080i.
720p is better because it shows all the lines in 1 go, and there are more vertical lines then just 1 shot of 1080i.
 
Think about it this way ... what would be the point o having a 1080p signal if 1080i was already true 1920x1080 resolution?

That tells you what HD Ready is.

That tells you the bravia is HD ready ... i.e. displays 720p and 1080i
Display Resolution 1366 x 768
That is the Bravia's resolution.
The Bravia in question is the KLV-30V300AB
If a Bravia of this resolution can display 1080i, then any TV with this resolution can display 1080i.

Would you like any more proof?
 
thats just stupid, the best a 1366x768 display can display is 768p

a proper 1080i panel must have 1080 horz lines!

if any salesman tells you because it can input a 1080i/p sigal then it is 1080 then slap him upside the head.

anyway, at makro there is a 46/47" sinotec lcd for 16k, very nice looking one

I have already shown you that 1080i is 2 x 540 whereas 1080p is 1 x 1080.
A 1366x768 TV is perfectly capable of playing 1080i i.e. 2 x 540 ... and just in case you didn't know ... 540 is less than 768.

If you needed a resolution of 1080 lcd to run 1080i ... why the hell would they have brought out 1080p which would then be an identical resolution.

Go to your local specialist store ... not makro or game (because they know crap all) ... and ask them which tv's can display 1080i.

Is 720p vs 1080i worth being concerned about? Yes and no. If you're a consumer looking for a new TV, you can happily ignore the 720p vs 1080i debate because every TV which is described as HDTV or HDTV Ready is required to support both formats.

Sorry, and no offense intended, but you're talking cr@p. Just because a set accepts 1080i signals doesn't mean that it can display them in full resolution. A 1080 panel has to be able to display 1920x1080. A 1366x768 will display 720p at maximum, even if it accepts a 1080i signal. And 720p is not "better" than 1080i... it all depends on your display. On a full HD panel 1080i will look much better than 720p. On a 720p panel, you'd struggle to see the difference.
 
Agreed on a full HD panel ... but we aren't speaking about full HD panels ... we are speaking about 1366x768 panels ... but in this case it also depends what the signal is ... for sport 720p is much better ... it also boils down to personal preference.

A 1366x768 panel is perfectly capable of displaying a 1080i res the same as it would display on a 1080p screen ... except the 1080p screen upscales it from 1080i to 1080p thereby making it better on a 1080p screen.

1080i is not the same as 1080p ... 1080p is all 1080 lines in 1 pass of 1/30 second
A 1080i image is 2 passes of 540 lines in 1/30 second ... thereby immitating 1080 lines, but instead of giving you 1080 lines in 1 go every 1/30 of a second, it breaks the picture into 2 parts and displays 540 lines every 1/60 of a second thereby equating to 1080 lines every 1/30 of a second ... and your brain then takes the two images of 540 lines and sticks them together to make a 1080 picture in your head.

A tv with a resolution of 1366x768 is more than capable of displaying 540 lines ... and so to make it seem as though the resolution is 1080p ... the TV displays the 540 lines every 1/60 of a second to give you 1080 lines in 1/30 of a second as opposed to the full 1080 lines every 1/30 of a second.

And no offence but if this still doesn't make sense to you ... go practice some maths followed by some logic.

I do however agree that a 1080p signal can obviously not play as 1080p on a 1080i screen.
And just by they way ... they don't call a screen with a resolution of 1366x768 a 1080i screen for the fun of it.

If I'm wrong ... then you better phone Sony, LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Philips, BenQ, Panasonic, Hitachi, PVision, Polaroid, JNC and every other manufacturer out there and tell them that the specifications in their manuals are wrong and that their TV's actually can't display 1080i.

eitai, I don't agree with you at all here. I'll explain what I understand it to mean and I speak under correction. If you are in fact right, then I apologize.

Firstly, like you say, the number part 720 or 1080 tells you how many lines of resolution the HDTV has. i/p just tells you whether it displays the image as interlaced (odd lines first then the even line) or progressive (all at once). Now what you're saying is that since a set is 1080i, it only displays the 540 lines over 2 passes which is right, but then you say OK since it's only 540 you can fit them onto a 720p display. How exactly does it work then?
 
That I still can't figure out ... I don't understand the method on how they get 540 lines to fill 768 ... but the same thing applies to the 720p ... because they need to fill a display of 768 lines with 720 lines ... which is the same sort of concept. Also ... I'm not sure what a standard TV signal is ... I think it is 480 lines ... but what ever the number ... they also have to get that to fill 768 lines ... so in all these cases they have to get it to fill somehow.

Also ... you said "it only displays the 540 lines over 2 passes which is right" ... maybe I just got lost in your grammar ... but what I mean is it displays 540 lines on each pass and therefore displays 1080 lines over every 2 passes with the optical illusion of a full 1080 lines.
 
You are still missing the point ... 1080i is not true high definition ... in essence its an optical illusion. It gives you the illusion of 1080 lines ... but in essence is only 2 x 540 lines ... i.e. 540 lines. Therefore the TV actually has to upscale it ti fit 768 lines ... but I'm not sure how the ratios work.
