I am looking for some comments on the above.

Which one to go for and why.

Let me hear it from the pros. Or post some good write-ups on it.

Plasma

Much cheaper and more value for money. Sure, an LCD is a nice addition to the living room, but if you weigh the two price tags together, it's much more expensive in the end.

You can buy a large Plasma for the price of a small yet stylish LCD. Both are nice, but if it was me, a wall-mounted plasma is the one I would choose. ;)

720p is fine by me. Still got the sansui I bought ages ago and considering the amount of high def content readily available its still more than up to the task.

Thanks. :)
I've heard about the life expectencies about the different techs. Is this anything to worry about or consider or not really?
Plasma apparently has a better black and handles fast graphics better, i.e. motor racing. Any specific sizes for plasma, or is bigger better?

Go hi Def plasma- true 1080p not this HD Ready crap
Thanks. :)

I don't know if it's still such an issue with Plasmas, but the burn-in has always been a worry for me.
It has happened a few times that I fall asleep on the couch by accident, wake up in the morning and find my LCD still displaying the same, static [Done, Restart or Delete] screen from my Vista HTPC. It is those times that I really thank myself for having gone LCD and not Plasma.

I also play Oblivion some times on my HTPC and wonder if the health bars would have been burned in on a Plasma if I had gone that route.

I'd say if you're going to have a PC connected to it, go LCD.

hhmm, yes, thanks newb5000
I've heard that LCD is the way to go for the future, apparently it will only be a matter of time before LCD catches up and surpasses Plasma.

Don't know how far off this 'future' is though...

So buy a plasma now and next time get a LCD :)

i bought a 40" sony bravia lcd last week after having a 37" no name brand lcd for a year. the difference is like night and day. i used to have motion smearing, which is now gone. the black were rubbish, that is now sorted, and the picture always either looked too bright with blooming whites or it was way too dark and black details were lost.

all those problems are now solved by getting a better lcd. this new sony bravia is about as good with colours and blacks as any plasma i have seen. for once i paid more for a branded item and i am happy i did. it doesnt do 1080p (i could care less) but that is it's only "apparent" downfall. i am sure i will get over it.

What did the 40" Sony Bravia LCD cost u, Renamed20070410 and where did you purchase it? I am looking for one of those, Need another LCD for my TV room to replace the 37" Mecer which will go to the bedroom. How does DSTV look on the 40" Sony Bravia LCD, and what make of LCD did you have before?

I backup Renamed20070410 on 40" sony bravia lcd.

I compared Sony Bravia 40 " LCD, Samsung LA40N71 40" LCD, and Samsung PS42C7 42" Plasma at a shop in Clearwater Mall.

On normal television and DSTV, the standard CRT TV's were much better than all these flat screens. I did not see any difference between the LCD's on picture quality with DSTV playing soccer. To me, both Samsung and Sony LCD's suffered the same fundamental problem when it comes to LCD's dealing with fast moving objects. Both come with 8ms response time which significantly improved them when compared to the better Samsung PLASMA on DSTV feed.

I wanted a 37-40" flat screen TV within 1. Budget 2. Quality 3. PC Games and Windows Media Center and 4. Looks

I bought the Samsung LCD for R9999. When watching TV and DSTV, I miss my CRT TV. When doing everything else or even just looking at it as furniture, it brings a smile to me.

If you can stretch your budget a little bit, go for Sony Bravia. As good as the Samsung LCD is, the Bravia puts it to shame on High Definition Content or upscaling normal DVD (480p) through HDMI cable to 720/1080p. The Samsung PLASMA lagged behind both LCD's on High Definition Content.

As for PLASMA vs. LCD evolving question, I could not come up with any overall winner.

Overall, I'm happy with my decision to move from normal CRT TV to LCD.

I still miss my Plasma , but traded it in because of these LCD vs Plasma pros and cons. Plasma runs too warm/hot, energy comsumption too high (almost double compared to LCD), Plasma too heavy, LCD more colour and brighter, but have difficulty in identifying different shades of black/grey. Not 100% happy with the LCD, but can live with it, until something better comes out that will make me 100% satisfied.
