LCD vc Plasma

I had a walk in to Tafelberg furnishers and have to say, the new Samsung looked brilliant with the HD media playing through it...they had the new Samsung model, 32 inch for about R10 500.00; and 40inch for R19500.

these lcd's seemed like they could compare to the new bravias on display which as always with Sony cost R5000 more for e.g. the bravia!

i guess if u got the bucks, go bravia
otherwise Samsung seems to be getting it right with great looking pics as well (and the samsung models look sexy too)...these new models had some kind of touch button on the side...nice effect!

nah, LCD :P
Won't ever go back to plasma/crt
What's your reasons?
Does size matter? ;)
No
i bought a 40" sony bravia lcd last week after having a 37" no name brand lcd for a year. the difference is like night and day. i used to have motion smearing, which is now gone. the black were rubbish, that is now sorted, and the picture always either looked too bright with blooming whites or it was way too dark and black details were lost.

all those problems are now solved by getting a better lcd. this new sony bravia is about as good with colours and blacks as any plasma i have seen. for once i paid more for a branded item and i am happy i did. it doesnt do 1080p (i could care less) but that is it's only "apparent" downfall. i am sure i will get over it.
Thanks. Price for this one?

You are talking about LCD's here, right?
I still miss my Plasma , but traded it in because of these LCD vs Plasma pros and cons. Plasma runs too warm/hot, energy comsumption too high (almost double compared to LCD), Plasma too heavy, LCD more colour and brighter, but have difficulty in identifying different shades of black/grey. Not 100% happy with the LCD, but can live with it, until something better comes out that will make me 100% satisfied.
Any other cons except for the shades of black / grey of LCD's?
Does it 'last' just as long as Plasma or longer?
Me too, I'm not 100% happy with LCD. Given 10K, I would still spend it on descent brand LCD despite LCD cons.
hhhmmm, not sure if I will fork out 10k+ for a set I am not 100% happy with...
Not value for money to me

Response rate of 8 is still not 100% for sports on DSTV.

House & Home are selling a Samsung 42" Plasma for R13999, the only reason why I'm telling you this is because it's advertised at 720p.

Not too big a fan of House & Home, but thanks, may go check it out

Is it actually 720p or higher / lower?

Many people seem to think that you unbox your new display, switch it on, watch whatever shows you want and that's it.

Something people tend to forget is that a newly unboxed display has usually been calibrated to very high settings, mainly to attract buyers in the showroom by out-colouring (hey I invented a new word) the competing brands standing nearby. If you don't calibrate it properly, you're doing yourself a disservice.

You don't need to be a rocket scientist to do a basic calibration, fortunately. You can get DVDs that can assist you. For eg, I have DVD Video Essentials. I highly recommend it. There are probably better disks out there, but this is the one I have and know, so it's the one I'll recommend - at least until such time that I learn better. ;)

I calibrated my in-laws LCD with it, and the difference between factory settings and customised settings were night and day. Come to think of it, it's been running a few months now, I should probably go calibrate it again.

The link to the main site for the disk is here: http://www.videoessentials.com/
(Ah, I see they have an HD version now)

I bought my copy from Amazon UK a few years back (Important because it's the PAL edition): http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_ss...keywords=video+essentials&Go.x=0&Go.y=0&Go=Go

EDIT:
For very basic calibration, you can use the THX optimizer on most Lucasfilm discs (Star Wars, etc). It's not great, but it's better than nothing at all.
