So I was just thinking... And did some reading on the net...

And Im wondering would you get a widescreen LCD or normal (4:3)

If you have one state the benefits etc.

Im looking at getting a widescreen one (Whenever that would be) because Im currently using a 17inch CRT monitor and a 19inch widescreen has got almost the same height as a 17 inch monitor?

Also I mostly do gaming, watch movies/series and do the odd other stuff (Browse/Type/Excel etc.) Would a widescreen be better suited towards this?

Would just like to know what people think and maybe whats their opinion where monitors are going (Widescreen or old school)

I'd get the widescreen one. Most HD movies (1080p and lower) use a widescreen resolution as default (from what I understand), so you'd probably find it more beneficial to have the widescreen capabilities.

For gaming the benefits are obvious. If the game supports widescreen you'll see more on the screen to your left and right, if it doesn't you'll see exactly what the 4:3 monitor can display.

I wouldn't bother buying a 4:3 monitor since 16:10 monitors aren't too expensive these days.

For browsing, widescreen is the way to go.

For Excel, widescreen is the way to go.

For movies, widescreen is the way to go.

For gaming, widescreen is the way to go.

Normal ones have slightly more actual screen surface. For games I'd say Normal, for movies definitely Wide.

The future does like distinctly widescreen-ish though.

Ok but why?

20 inch LCD's are just outside my budget and thats the crap ones... Also what difference does an inch make?

put a normal 19" next to a wide 19" and you will see.

the smaller ws are far too low, open a word document or webpage and you will see tiny bit of usefull info in the middle and wasted space on the side.
When you get a bigger monitor like a 22" its all good though.

its upto personaly preference really.

Depends what you gonna use mostly too.

I'd say Widescreen is awesome for movies (no black top and bottom in movies that are 16:9 ratio wich you get on normal 4:3 LCD's)

Well like I said Im used to a 17 inch and a 19 inch widescreen is basically the same height as a 17 inch screen, so it would be the same as Im use to :)

22inch widescreens are expensive and not worth the money if your not going to use it to entertain atleast a few people in an entertainment area :D

Ofcourse sometimes my bedroom does become an entertainment area ;)

i have an 19" wide and i love it, just one thing:
there is some games not supporting the wide screen function,
quite annoying some times to play with a stretched screen.
but for movies its great

Just wanted to add my vote for a 20" or bigger widescreen. They are awesome. You'll love it. And you can really see the difference between a 19" and 20".
