Hi all,

I want you all to take a moment and watch this video on YouTube

Seeing this video pushed me to post this thread and I'm hoping it gets stickied! :)

Many of you know me for a long time, coming from "gdiza" to "medicnick83" and you all know what I do for a living but yeah, I need you all to try and go on a first aid class, level 3 gets my vote or at least a CPR course or doing updates.

If you have done it long ago, time to redo it, if you are not able to do it (because of medical condition or whatever), please send your kids or family members to do it.

The more people who know CPR, the better.

Saving a life is probably one of the most amazing things you can do.

I could post 100 stories on this thread of where CPR could've saved a person's life but I won't do that - find a recognized place in your area and book a first aid level 3 class or, if the place offers CPR classes, go and do it.

PLEASE

There is only 1 place I'd recommend for CPR / First Aid classes in Cape Town (Because I live in Cape Town) and that is:

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT CONSULTANTS CC.
Cell : 0794770001 E-Mail – [email protected]

Any other questions etc, post it and I'll get back to you - if you live outside of Cape Town and want to post a place, do it.

For guys in Pretoria and surrounding areas, I can recommend you do your CPR course at CC Training .

Do it with your friends, family and colleagues. You might save a life, but they might also save your life.

AHA said:
Be the Difference for Someone You Love
If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a child, a spouse, a parent or a friend. 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen in homes. Unfortunately, only about 46% of people who experience an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest get the immediate help that they need before professional help arrives.

Awesome thread medicnick83, I fully agree with this. I have not had any incidents to talk about but I do have level 1 first aid training. I am looking to do level 2 and beyond. The big issue for me is that some companies don't take safety very seriously at the work place. Their focus is on getting the work done, if any safety related time is needed, you often have to do it in your own time.

How much does it cost roughly?

I believe

Offer it for about R1100 per person, but this is working off a old price list - if you contact Clint, he can update you accordingly.

I've seen so many companies plan to do this, get health and safety officers, do first aid training but to them, it's unnecessary because "we've never need it before" so they don't do it or they refuse to do it or push it as long as possible - then something happens and they sit there with eggs on their faces - that's when they meet me and my colleagues.

Are there labour laws about having trained first aiders in the workplace? Is the company required to sponsor training for a certain number of people?

I believe there is...

The BIG companies play the game - it's the small to medium companies that are not.

Just a quick question if I may.

Can you with CPR resuscitate someone who's breathing and heart have stopped? Or would you need to continue to do CPR until such time as a defib unit arrives?

I don't want to get too technical with the answer but I need you to just understand the basics;

1. By doing PROPER CPR you are pumping oxygen and blood around the body - the brain for example needs OXYGEN etc to function properly - if it doesn't receive it, it dies and then basically brain dead so...

Read up on VF: http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Condi...ntricular-Fibrillation_UCM_324063_Article.jsp
VF requires a "SHOCK" to (in a sense) reset the heart's electrical activity.

At the end of the day, you are taught about this in a BASIC way when doing the FIRST AID classes or CPR classes because it's important to understand what is happening in the body, why you need a AED etc.

Once you commence resuscitation you cannot stop until a doctor or paramedic takes over from you
Only a doctor can declare

1 first aider for every 100 in an office or shop environment, starting at a office size of 10. Other places, 1:50

Company must pay yes

I am not discouraging CPR in any way, but i have read numerous articles showing the effectiveness of CPR is not as high as we are lead to believe.
There are also some negatives pertaining to CPR which can cause some complications.
This obviously doesnt mean anyone should abandon the practice, but I think focus should be on getting access to an AED in the workplace and public area's

And A paramedic... There is more to it but suffice to say... Don't give up to EMS arrives.

My wife reacted to a block watch incident a while back where a young lady had collapsed.
When she got there the girl was non-responsive, lying blue on the floor. The family of the girl were in hysterics.

She got them to phone for help, and started CPR even though she has no training. The EMS arrived a long time later.
Needless to say the girl had passed away, IMHO she was already gone by the time my wife got there. My wife was buggered from trying to help her, and the EMS provided some tips on locking your elbows etc.

Point is, if the family had some training they may have been able to save the girl
