Learners and License

My wife when she got her learners the first time did the same as Akasha waited till the last minute to book the drivers and failed, it took her an additional 9 years to go again was like wtf!!!! But to be fair my son was born, some other family things took priority as well, but she got it the second time around almost a decade later.

To me it’s as important a life step to independence as turning 18 and getting Matric etc.

It takes you so many more places.

More so with a kid I couldn’t imagine not having a license.

For guys it seems to be that, for women it doesn't seem to be. I nagged my wife for years to get it, her excuse was why you can drive me around. The kicker was when I had to start going out of my way to get her to work and myself costing us a small fortune, that's only when she started to look at getting a license. When she finally got it, I was actually told "You're right, having a license is so much better and I can get around without you." I was actually told I was right :-)

And yet a car is ever easier so there is no need to find a hack and drive a truck.

And please relax your crusade.

There is simply no logical point to getting a truck license in favour of a car license unless you plan to do that as your day job.

To be honest I could never marry anyone so content with being reliant on me for basic things.

Probably not even date. A license would be conditional to marriage for damn sure.

But you are right don’t think I’ve never met a man without a license but know of plenty of women who were deeply delayed in that regard.

One friend of my wife’s had so many jobs fly her by for lack of a license and still couldn’t be bothered.

35 now and relying on lifts from family to get kids around or also pestering husband. And of course they have marital issues...no surprise to me at all.

I wouldn't even call it a hack to be honest, a truck isn't really that easy to drive, you've got like 16 gears forward so many back, you've got to constantly watch every inch of the thing as it's the size of 3 cars, yes you've got big mirrors but that's it.

I think it's one of those cases exactly as per this thread where someone once said it was easier and everyone believes it yet they never took both tests.

Either way even if it's easier it is really a bit silly. Just do the thing that you need the thing for and deal with it.

The scary thing is, I taught my wife to drive at 20, she knew how to drive an incredibly long time before she actually got her license.
 
Okay i see a debate has started

But anyways is the code 10 trick is allowed? and also are you able to choose the month to write the learner's test.

Cause it's like Matric for adults and it's more of an American Matric equivalency.
 
When I was 17-18 I remember everyone was impatient to get their license. I suppose some may not have bothered, but it always struck me as unusual when people (assuming middle class where there’s a car or two in the family and easy access to lessons and so on) don’t bother until years later. With my kids, the one frustrated me by waiting two months after her 18th birthday to book. The youngest had her license by 9:30 on her 18th birthday.

Sometimes they aren't middle class, maybe they are lower to middle class and there is only one car? Maybe they lived close enough to walk where they needed to go and so on.

What I meant by that was that I can understand not having a license if you grew up poor and the family had no car to learn in, and paying for lessons wasn’t a priority when there was food that needed buying.

Mine will promptly attend an advanced driving course the very next day alongside me.
