The centralised telephonic booking system was discontinued. You have to physically go in to the testing station where you want to have your appointment and make a booking.
You rock up, make sure you have all the paperwork necessary: ID, copy of ID, photos, wads and wads of money, and black pen + something to press on. I don't know about other stations, but at Centurion the process goes as follows:
- Rock up, find the security guy who has all the application forms. Request a form for X (in your case, learner's test application form). He will give you the right form.
- Fill out the form and go back to the guy. He will check that you have all the right bits and pieces and check your ID copy and photos etc. He then takes the forms and goes inside.
- He comes back a few minutes later with a booking date and time for you. It is generated automatically by a computer so you don't have a say in what you get. If the date and time do not suit you, you can try to ask him to go re-generate a new one for you with the next batch of papers he takes in. If you accept the slot you've got, then you can proceed with the process.
Up to this point it is all rather quick and painless.
- You go inside to the eye test station. Do the eye test. Also relatively quick and painless.
- You go pay. This is where it gets excruciating. The pay queue is everybody together from all the various places in one. It can take you anything from 10 min to an hour to get through the payment queue. Do the standing/sitting place shuffle. Pay.
You will receive a confirmed booking paper with your date and time etc. Keep that in a safe place! You will need to bring it to the actual test to be allowed into the testing room.
Good luck.
