So, here's the deal. My cousin's husband is around 40 and does not have a drivers license. This really sucks because he does not drink so if we go on the bender, the only guy who is in any condition to drive is the one who is unlicensed. Although he does still drive, this situation is not really the best. And using my license is all very well except he is near-bald shaven and my pic is of a long haired monster. Sure, we've gotten away with it but this cannot go on. He needs to write his learners for a start.

What I want to know is the process. We're on the East Rand and he works in Edenvale, lives in Primrose. Where do we go for this learners? What happens? Do we book then write then get pictures, fingerprints etc before the LL is issued? I haven't done this for years so I have no idea how it works nowadays. And when I did it, I was in Lichtenburg where the processes are very different.

You go to the center and get your photo taken and fingerprints done and then book for a date (most places I know you have to book a month or so in advance, it is always full). Then if you pass when you write it you get it right there. From what I remember it costs about R135 for the photos and the booking, not 100% sure though

Thanks Jamo - Interesting. I would have thought you book, you write and pass then they fingerprint you. And I would have thought you supply the photos. Okay. Interesting. Any ideas about this enatis thing? Does my cousin have to phone a centre or just pitch up?

First get the necessary studying material, study it (naturally). Get a set of photos taken and go to the Brakpan testing station. They take about an hour or two to get started, but they are efficient once they have woken up. The reason why he should study the material first is because they assume you are ready to write immediately, and give you the soonest possible date.

Getting hold of the K53 Random Test Generator is advisable, since it matches the test they give you.

Not done on forms or booklets anymore...everything's computerised. My niece went this year...they use the touchscreen and when you're done, you press finish and the computer tells you if you passed...or not

The central telephonic booking system is no longer being used. To make a booking you need to go TO the testing centre. Make sure you have 4 ID photos, at least R250 cash (the fees keep changing so no single source is reliable for long), your ID, certified copies of your ID.. everything you could possibly need to prove your identity and then some.

Take a black pen and something to press on. Take a chair or hat if the queue is in the sun and there's nowhere to sit.
You will be given (or may need to ask for) an application form for learner's license test appointment. Asking other people standing around what is going on and how it works is never a good idea - usually they're just as confused as you are. Find an official or a security guard or someone official, and ask them for the application form and the learner's test queue. I was at Centurion a month ago, so it may be slightly different, but essentially:

Get the form, fill it out and submit it to whoever takes them. They will make sure that you have all the proper documents. They take the form and vanish into the building. They return with a sheet of paper where the computer has randomly assigned you a test date and time. You have little to no say in the matter. You either accept the given date and time, or perhaps you can convince the guy to try get you another random date and time generated.

Once you accept the date and time, you will be sent for the eye test. Pass that, and you get sent to pay for your booking. This is usually where the big queues come in. You pay, are issued a receipt and voila. You're scheduled.

Then you wait. You will usually pay a booking fee (R100+) and then when you write and PASS the test, you pay a license issuing fee (about another R100+). Buy and study the K53 book. There are several online tests available too.
