Hey guys and gals,

I am looking for advice on what to buy. Budget makes a difference, but I would rather spend a little bit more for quality. Basically two questions:

1) LED or LCD, did some research and saw there is about a 3k price difference between the two. But like I said I don't mind spending the extra if it is worth it.

2) Sony or Samsung. I am a big Sony fan, but can you give me reasons why Samsung is better or just as good. Besides Samsung being cheaper.

I will basically be using the TV for watching my HD movies and series via Med8ter multimedia player and he TV will be placed in my room.

And do you guys have any suggestions ?

LED because its betta ya heaaard?!?!

But on a seriaaas note, to me the contrast ratio makes a moerse difference and here LED comes out on top, waaaay up top. Also the blacks are blacker, i like my blacks...
@zamicro i also agree with that fully! Maybe go for a smaller size to make up the difference in price between the same sized LCD & LED if you really want LED otherwise theres nothing wrong with a good LCD.
Also go Samsung they have great panels for less than Sony and the specs for both are usually close 2 one another. Samsung makes gr8, panels no moans there

ive had samsung LCD for a while, awesome TV, no complaints. Imho sony`s are a bit better, but last time i checked price diff wasnt worth it. Prices might have evened out a bit.

zamicro has a good point, i dont think people buy tv`s anymore that are suppose to last 20 years. Prices are coming down rapidly, get a new one in 3 years anyway. But if its within budget, the a LED. But both are great

My advice: You are going to want to buy a new TV in about 3 years time. So buy the cheapest you can get now.

Agree. I was about to get a 32" Sony for R5K and now I see I can get an el-cheopo for R3K. Going to get the elchepo as I need to get some more over the next year (bedroom, lounge, business).

Must say this forum is truly awesome. Thank you very much guys for the advice. Will really everything too account. As this is for my room, I will go the cheaper option and then at a later stage fro for a bigger and better LED option and whatever technology is available that time.

Don't forget to check out the Samsung PS42C430 HD ready plasma. R6500 and very good for sport and TV. If you are not concerned about sport/TV, then go for LCD/LED.

Sony 32" EX400 and Samsung 32" 5 Series are quite popular LCDs.

He didn't even ask about plasma?
Aren't you anal about replying to only what was asked?

Just letting them in on a little secret.

It'll be better than EX400/5 Series LCD for everything 720p and below. Methinks that is enough reason. ;)

I got myself a samsung 32' full hd 5 series(R4500). . It truly kicks @ss Reason say you have an 2.5 external hdd you can plug it in and play your HD movies from it. The sony bravia 42' that my dad has cant.

No! No! No!

That's not how it works ;)

Go read 'our' other thread and see how many times you told me not to post because you felt it irrelevant

yep, samsung media play is awesome... supports mkv aswell, saves having to buy a media player unless you really want/need one

Just got my elchepo 32" lcd yesterday (R3K) and really impressed. End of day it comes down to what you want to use it for.

In my case it was for the bedroom to watch public TV and DVDs.

Its a HiSense from HiFi corp. Was part of a new cellphone contract and it was cheaper to take this deal (R145 x 24) than to buy the TV cash and take the contract on sim card only (we already have a phone).

I will say that size does count. 32" is great for the room but I will get a 42" for the lounge. Also if your a family and/or have your own business, start out with a cheaper screen as you can always find a use for it :) - I need to get at least another two screens soon (lounge and business).

Oh, and if you play console - damn it is nice. Plugged in my PS3 yesterday and BFBC2 looks like a new game. But do run it on HDMI

Zamicro is right. No matter what panel you buy you always looking around for something better.Time is of no consequence. In time to come LED's will be the price of what we're paying for LCD's today.Remember the days when a 42' plasma was nearly R20k.
An LED is basically an LCD that uses diodes instead of a flourescent tube so I can't see why the prices shouldn't drop.So buy a cheap lcd now and get that led later.

lol this post is back. Everytime everyone agrees to disagree someones reposts the now famous LCD vs LEd question and someone will somehow add plasma to the discussion.

What do you guys think of these? (all from Makro):

Sinotec 47" (119cm) Full HD LCD TV - R8k

SAMSUNG 37" (94cm) Full HD LCD TV - R6k

SAMSUNG 40'' (102cm) Full HD LCD TV - R7k (I'm keen on this one.... - I'm Samsung fanboi btw)

Sony 40'' (102cm) FHD LCD TV plus HD PVR Decoder - R8.5k

LG 42" (107cm) Full HD LCD TV - R7k

p.s. Need one to replace the 74cm Samsung CRT in my lounge. Seating will be 3 to 4 metres away from the TV. It will be used mainly for sport (football) on Dstv SD (probably HD at a later stage) and watching HD & FHD files via a media player. I've already got a 27" for the PS3 and a 22" for the PC - both Samsung FHD LCDs.

p.p.s Why does an expensive Samsung have a 12 month guarantee but a cheap Sinotec has a 5 year guarantee ???
