LED vs Plasma

Magandroid - Thanks for the info. I assume those are the E450 plasmas. That's what I'd get if I do end up getting one. They're very well priced considering their picture quality.

Speaking of stores, Maverick Jester - I live in Cape Town, so no Cats Digital for me unfortunately.

The Samsung PS51E450 plasma at Game is R7399 and PS51E490 (has 3d capability) is R8999. At Dionwired the PS51E490 is priced at R5500 which is an excellent price. 2 years ago I decided to go with the PS51D450 (thanks to PP) and never looked back. The kids play all their Xbox games on it and I have watch many movies. The quality is great and I am quite happy with my decision.

PostmanPot is based in CT, he can recommend a good place for you to view prospective TV's...

Great. I have had suggestions to go to Audio Vision (been there before), so I'll give them a try.

Just a little disappointed at present after finding out recently that no matter what kind of TV I get, I'll end up with a glossy screen and therefore reflections.

Anywhere that has a dimly lit viewing area with enough viewing distance to replicate that of your room/house.

Trouble is stores don't usually have windows.

I'm thinking about placing a glossy laptop in the position the TV will be, to use as a reference.

Have you noticed any image retention? Any bad reflections off the glass panel?
I personally don't have any problems with image retention on my plasma screen and the issue with reflection is not that bad, but then again the tv is.not the back room where no direct sunlight coming in. Whatever light does come in does not cause that much of a reflection. I have friends that are quite disappointed with their LCD purchases, especially at the entry level price point.
This purely my personal opinion and am very happy with my plasma.

Won't you be using it at night mostly?

Which direction does the window face?

Curtains/blinds?

I'll actually be using it throughout the day. I could be sitting in front of it for hours during the brightest times of the day.

I'll link to something I posted earlier in the thread. A visual representation will be the best way to allow others to imagine the situation.

As you can see, it at least won't be facing the window, but it also won't be backing it, like my PC screen, which is on a desk right in front of the window in that picture.

I have light-colored curtains that let through a fair amount of light.

That really should not be much of a problem. You can even angle the TV slightly. It's usually only lighting directly in line/front that you should worry about. Light coloured curtains should also do enough to reduce the general ambient lighting of the room. Again though I reiterate going FHD plasma or going home. Panasonic have a 42" FHD model. Otherwise Samsung 51". Remember this will last several years, wiser to save up more and get FHD.

Well that's good news at least. I could just get darker curtains to make it better, if it bothers me.

I agree with the FHD thing, especially since I'll be outputting 1920x1080 from my GPU. I assume things will be distorted if I get a 1024x768 plasma. What are your reasons for recommending FHD over HDR?

It is outside my budget, but this one seems really nice: http://purpleflytrading.co.za/shopping/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=275062

This is the HDR one I was gonna get: http://purpleflytrading.co.za/shopping/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=275059

Because your viewing distance is that of a bed length. HDR is really only good for 2.5m+ viewing distance.

That and the pixels are not square, they're rectangular.

The pixel shape is countered by something, surely. I've watched content on plasmas with rectangular pixels and it looked normal.

Sure, with movies/series and DSTV etc. it's fine, but it's best for PC input to bypass the processing/downscaling and match the panel's native resolution. 1024x768 is squarer/4:3, and not 16:9 as per HDR plasma.

Yeah, those adjustments may affect my gaming.

I wish FHD plasmas weren't so expensive. They must look amazing.

I'm also still concerned about IR and burn-in. Some people on this thread and others have stated that it's no longer an issue, and others have said that is occurs quite frequently and is annoying to get rid of.

They do, especially connected to PC with a nice wallpaper.

Image burn is no longer an issue, and you might only get a bit of IR if something stays on the screen for 30+ minutes in PC mode with screen fit enabled (disables burn protection), more so if the plasma is set to higher brightness/cell light. It's unlikely and goes away in a few seconds after changing to another view/window. Think about it, when you use your PC, the image you see will always be changing for the most part - alt tabbing/switching windows, games with static HUDs etc. going into a cinematic, movies/series/media, etc.

Just set your PC to put the monitor to sleep after 20 minutes and perhaps hide the Start bar.

The taskbar is the main thing I'm concerned about. That's there almost all the time. The bookmark bar in Chrome too.

What's "screen fit"?

Sets TV to 1:1 pixel mapping with no overscan. Disabled burn protection on plasmas.
