Leeway for speeding

Is there leeway for speeding at all?

I set my cruise control to 131km/h, which is probably a real speed of 128km/h - and I thought in a 120km/h they start trapping at 132km?

Else, I have a number of other fines coming my way ...

Depending on the car its going to be off plus minus 5 anyway, so you can't look at it that precisely. Generally at highway speeds you can get away with 10 above, but thats cutting it mighty close

Depending on the cruise control setup it mighty also not peg it at exactly that speed

Aarto mandates fines from 10km/h over the limit. So up to 129 you're ok.

I wrote the software for a number of the cameras around the country. Trigger is 10km/h above limit.
On the freeway, I set cruise control at 108 or 128 depending on section and never receive fines (when on cruise control).

I've received speed fines in Jhb for doing 105 in a 100 zone so either I've been conned by the greedy traffic department whose sole purpose is revenue collection rather than safety or Jhb/Gauteng doesn't give leeway. I know in other provinces there is definitely 10kmh leeway though.

There is no aarto charge code for 105 in a 100 zone. You got conned.

I've read that a speedo MUST NOT under-read but can over-read by up to 10%.

So you might be setting your cruise control at 131 but are actually only doing 120ish.

I stay in Gauteng and do the R21 and N4 from Edenvale to Hartees 3 times a week. No fines with cruise control set to 8kms above the limit. Me thinks something is broken.

I found out last Sunday that the maximum fine they can write is for 160km/h... Had to drive behind the cops to the police station.... who kept stopping to ask if I was sure if I wanted to go to the police station or if i wanted to pay a 'spot fine'... fun times....

if you going to stay at the exact km, make sure you have the right size tyres, that can affect the speedometer.
If you going downhill the cruise control might go over the selected limit by 3-5km, then you will get caught.

Does it say it on the fine? 105 in 100km zone?

Luckily I haven't paid those fines yet, they were both from the M1 South a few years ago going into JHB just when you past Southgate on the highway, they were sitting in the regular spot there under the bridge. If I recall correctly one was for 105km/h and the other for 107km/.I'll go see if I can dig them out from wherever they are.

Does this 10km/h leeway count for the average speed cameras as well?

Passed quite a few of them recently going through to Durban.

Yes I've tested this on several trips down to Durban and the leeway applies there.

Still applies there and everywhere really. Otherwise I would've received millions of fines. Last fine I received was in 2007.

Most upmarket modern cars have very little error in the speed indicated. On a bmw it is +- 1% i.e. 1.3 km/h at 130km/h.

When i first got my car I received a couple of fines for doing 131 while my limit was set at 130.

i now keep it at 127 max

Also I think they only start fining at 129km/h

*edit
According to this link the charges start at 131km/h in a 120 zone

You get a 9km/h leeway on the freeways, and also the speedo on the car is almost never accurate (it shows a higher speed than what you are actually doing). You usually have a speed 5km/h lower than what is shown on the speedo. This depends on the car of course.

You can set your cruise control to 130 km/h in a 120 km/h zone and you should be fine.

The trick is to stay at that speed :p
