Left hand drive vehicles

As far as I have heard, it is not legal in South Africa. I have seen such vehicles in SA, but I have heard from an official that you are supposed to "change or get rid of them". I seriously doubt this though, as I cannot see how that is possible.

Imagine you can bypass LHD vehicle imports by putting the vehicle on a Maisto pedestal sealed in carton box “limited 1:1 edition” and import as collectable/toy…

The converse is true. I drove a RHD car in France. At the toll-booth, the operator sent the guard to my window to collect the 2 euro fee. Can't imagine it happening for LHD drivers here, you would get a bit of lip from the lady in the booth.

Is it still illegal Left Hand vehicles to South Africa?

Yes. You are free to buy one but you cannot register it for road use.

I plan to purchase a Shelby GT500 register it in my name and bring it to SA next year? Will I have problems?

No, you can't register it and drive it on the roads. Yes you will have problems.

You have two options,
1. Import the car and have a RHD conversion done on it (be careful who does the job as some people are a bunch of hacks and safety is a issue)
2. Wait a bit, Ford will be bringing out RHD Mustangs to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Mustang in 2014 or 2015 for the international RHD markets (UK, Oz, NZ, SA etc). These will be manufactured as RHD vehicles and will not be conversions.

Thanks Ponder, I guess waiting will be a better option, I just hope that Ford SA will not rape us on prices

I'm not 100% sure but I remember something about if its a classic car then its still allowed.
