Ok, I have to find out before tomorrow morning:

1. What are the laws relating to purchasing LHD vehicles in SA? Is it allowed?

2. What are the laws relating to driving LHD vehicles in SA?

I've heard the former prohibition was made a law a while back, and the latter is imminent.

My son goes to the American International School, i see alot of LHD drive vehicles, so im sure you can import one if you give a 'valid' reason.

You are not allowed to import LHD vehicles anymore by law. Not sure how it would work if you imported to a small African country and drove it across the border and changed the reg though.

I queried importing a Dodge Viper from the US and was told that due to a law change we're not allowed to import LHD.

When the Ferrari Enzo came out, a local guy bought one and had it imported... the last I heard it was still stuck in the harbour at PE (I think it was at PE)...

In 2000 or 2001 they stopped issuing import permits for LHD vehicles - this was about two months after I imported mine and at the time the Tanny in Pretoria told me that I'd just made the deadline.

It would not work even if you brought it through another African country - you still need to get an import permit before you bring it in - or the vehicle will be held in customs at your cost if arrived by boat (not sure how they handle this if arrived by road).

Now they are trying to get all the LHD vehicles off the roads.

LHD car owners to challenge law

Classic left-hand drive car owners are ready to take the department of transport all the way to the Constitutional Court if it does not back down in its attempts to systematically obliterate the classic car trade in the country.

they said they gonna outlaw LHD vehicles because they cause lots of accidents, what BS.

yes gov, ban the perfectly safe high end vehicles and let your own taxi drivers continue to drive their falling apart taxi's :(

it would be interesting to see stats on LHD vehicle accidents compared to other accidents.

Must confuse the hell out of hijackers and traffic light retailers. :)

the hijacker grabs the door and yanks it open screaming for the driver to get out only to find there is no driver as he is sitting on the other side and the drivers rottweiller is on the right.

Thank goodness I haven't had a running with hijackers, but the traffic light retailers do find it amusing.
My wife travels with me most times to take care of the toll road payments and keypads at residential complexes, but if she's not in with me it's a real pain in the but in such cases.

You are not allowed to register LHD vehicles in South Africa. I recently bought some trucks from the U.S, the big kind, 24 wheelers. You can not legaly register them in South Africa. You can however register them in Botswana, Zambia, etc (which I did) and operate them in South Africa, no problem... Go figure.

Yip... toll/payment booths and other such boxes where the driver needs to insert/get a card are not exactly aimed at LHD vehicles :D

And overtaking must suck!

Well, it's going to be tough when they ban all the fire engines then. They're all LHD.

Is it still illegal Left Hand vehicles to South Africa?

I plan to purchase a Shelby GT500 register it in my name and bring it to SA next year? Will I have problems?

Thank
