Legislation Set To Level The Communications Playing Field

How about community networks?

Anyone know how this will impact home / mesh networks? AFAIK current legislation prohibits me from creating a 'home network' that crosses a public road. If this were to become legal, we may see many more community networks.

I don't see this legislation having much impact except for the local type networks (wifi mesh networks, wimax, MAN, with free/low cost local phone calls, etc) where Telkom holds no monopoly, unlike the SAT-3 cable which we have to wait for NEXT YEAR for supposed legislation that will allow other parties to purchase bandwidth directly.

HvRooyen, last time I asked that question I was basically told..

"It's still not 100% legal but you will be ignored. As long as it's non-commerical you are fine. If you want to make money then get a license"

I could be wrong though...

it isn't worth going after small people. there is already a wan around jhb
