I am still bitter with my mom over the Lego issue.

I had a 1m x 1m x .5m box that was absolutely FULL of lego... I got too old so they just tossed it.. :crying:

Yeah that's around the amount I've got now. The boxes were included so I can actually see what's in there. The stuff costs a ridiculous amount of money, and the stuff never "gets old", so one's children can always put it to good use.

That isnt much got 2 big containers full of box sets, 1 full of lego pieces without sets/small sets and a toolbox full of lego pieces too and couple of roads + small boxes and dont have space for my two big boxes (Lego Airport and Space Shuttle with full rocket boosters) so have them in my cupboard :(

I display my favourite stuff

Don't tell me about the cost of Lego. During the week my son showed me a Lego set he wanted from the latest catalogue. Awesome. So I tell him I will help him but it but he must first get pocket money (he is nearly 5 and we have not yet started with pocket money). Cool I thought, he can get it next year or whenever he earns money.

Next evening he comes running to me with excitement and shows me his pocket money - he found 5 cents in his pants pocket. Now I have to pay for a new lego set when pay day comes.

My mom also gave away all our Lego. Very annoying.

For a 3 year old I'd get some Duplo.

Its not legislation, it's Amazon company policy. Apparently they decided the losses they suffered due goods getting stolen where not worth it.
Until fairly recently Amazon.com did not ship items other than books, movies and music outside the US. It had nothing to do with South Africa. For a very brief period, years ago, they switched to courier-only for South Africa, claiming excessive losses. That policy was quite quickly reversed and they never mentioned it again.

Its got nothing to do with South Africa, they do not ship outside North America on certain items - its the same as when you try and order a lighted Kindle 4 Cover from Amazon.us, you need to do it from Amazon.uk. This is when trying to buy a Kindle 4 which they do ship with DHL and then adding in the lighted cover.

This happened end of last month so nothing new. Its just my biggest frustration with Amazon since I started using them 8years ago.
The cover must be a glitch because they usually ship their own Kindle products internationally. Other companies' Kindle accessories are another story. The limitations are frustrating, but I doubt it's Amazon's choice. I'm pretty sure they'd prefer to sell everything to anyone anywhere.

Eish, I just fell into this about a month ago. Have 4000 pieces now. Most i got from a second hand sale . A mother was clearing out her sons old toys and I snapped up the sale :) I have bought a few more sets over the past few weeks, but dam, they are expensive.
UPDATE:
Ja....Eish.. Lego.

I have now managed to buy 3 clear out sales from Moms cleaning out their kids toy collections :D , got some decent bargains there. Most had all the books, and I have been building and checking them all. I now have over 100 sets, almost 10000 pieces, Dont even ask what it is costing so far. Bought 10 new sets with the 90 odd second hand sets I managed to get. I have bought storage and stacking trays and have sorted everything where it is needed.

There are one or two local online shops such as Kidiwinks (mentioned earlier) that sell Lego online if you need. Also check out Bricklink if you guys are looking for stuff. If anyone in Durban is selling, pm me what you have and we can negotiate a price ;)

^5.

The collection I got recently (mentioned in this thread) also has all the boxes and everything still. Mostly big sets though, like A3 size boxes. I will go crazy one day and build all of them :p

Am I the only one thinking these 'themed' lego sets are rubbish & the only proper way to go is the old-school square blocks and nothing else?

Agree

I've stopped buying themed sets for my son and only buy him the blocks. He and his little sister get more fun out of it. Sure, some novelty pieces are great but I find sometimes the themed ones take all the creativity out it.

Themed set = heavy $$$ for them. just look at how expensive the star wars sets are compared to normal sets.

I think it depends on the set. The large theme sets, typically several hundred or even a couple of thousand pieces, take quite an effort to build, and they're invariably made up of a large number of pieces that can used for other purposes, so you can get creative. The sets I don't like are the ones that are made up almost entirely of specialised parts which quite often cannot even be used with standard bricks.

For my children I normally just buy the boxes of bricks though.

People still collect Lego as adults? Holy crap. Speaking of which I still have the complete set of those (6) Lego Bionic things that roll into a ball. All assembled in their containers, haven't touched them in years. Cost me R50 a pop back in 2003 or so.

Next evening he comes running to me with excitement and shows me his pocket money - he found 5 cents in his pants pocket. Now I have to pay for a new lego set when pay day comes.

Must admit reading this comment from last year and your current sad face Tigger avatar really made an impact on this. Clever kid. :D

I've got a Mindstorm - really awesome but in 3-4yrs I've only used a few times. Do not get it when your kids are too young (my mistake) as you do not want of your lego pieces going AWOL.
Mindstorms is also a computer product, so it gets more capable as time goes by.
