Lenovo 3000 N500

Hi there hardware forum gods.

I am looking for a new laptop for the Mrs. It will do basic stuff for her in the office and at home. The kids (9 and 7) will get introduced to Pcs on it( thus a wireless keyboard and mouse), they will hardly tax it though. Once at home dad(me) will do a bit of graphic work on it, some video etc. That will be processor/ram intensive.

I have searched just about all the common sites for hardware sites and come to the following laptop.

Lenovo 3000 N500

Intel Core2Duo T5800 2.0Ghz
2 Gb Ram
250 Gb HDD
DL Dvd Writer
Wireless Network
On Board Intel 4500MH Graphics
Webcam
Bluetooth
10/100 Ethernet
MS Vista Home Prenuim

I like all of the specs above except the ethernet and Vista. I likethats its Core2Duo vs Celeron or CoreDuo.

I like that its the later Intel 4500 graphics chip versus the more common Intel X3100 at this price point.

2 Gb vs 1 Gb ram also is just great.

I would wish for a 10/100/1000 connection. But its not worth going to prevision generation processor(Celeron as well -) and chip for, that's the only way I can find a laptop with a 1Gb ethernet connection at the same price.

The best pricing so far is R7299 vat inclusive.

Any suggestion of an alternative laptop at a similar price or a the same laptop at a better price would be much appreciated.

I have the 3000 N200. Display is excellent, Keyboard is outstanding. Feels like a real solid machine.

That price is actually very good, considering Pinnacle sells it for more than that.

Agreed. They're rock solid.

Only downside I have is that it gets hot.

I wouldn't say it's especially cheap. It's a brand name, sure, but you're getting what you pay for. Older processor, Intel graphics, Vista. All the rest is par for the course.

Picked up the notebook this afternoon. Its looks nice and solid, alot better than some of the other notebooks that I had been considering. A feature that was not mentioned is that it comes with a HDMI connector. I think that pretty handy and it came as extra bonus for me. Busy burning the backup/recovery discs now.

This notebook sounds like the notebook I recently bought. Dell Studio 1537. Same processor, chipset, ram, hard drive, etc. But it came with Vista Ultimate. Also has HDMI out and webcam. Paid over R10k, so you got a REALLY good deal.
