I have a Lenovo W530, and recently started to have battery problems. It initially simply did not charge, but then started to give a popup message that the battery is only has a few % left (this happened when the laptop was plugged in).

It has now deteriorated, and it is not possible to start the laptop with the battery connected.

--When I try to start it with the battery connected, it starts the startup routine, but then simply drops power (completely dead) within a few seconds
--The laptop works without any problems when the battery is removed (not connected)

Any idea what the cause can be (and what to try to fix it)?

You need a new battery. My Thinkpad had an excellent battery that would hold 3 hours from 2007 - 2012. Then towards the end of 2013 that battery warning came up and now its a desktop. Won't last more than 5 minutes. I think as time goes by and charge cycles that accumulate, the battery loses the ability to maintain charge or something like that.
