Hi,

My Lenovo Y5070 screen has decided to turn green.
20161119_161203.jpg

And it's out of warranty, 1 year over in July.
It is the the IPS version of the display, http://www.wootware.co.za/lenovo-id...ndows-10-single-language-64-bit-notebook.html, 15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) IPS LED Display.

Does anyone know where I can get it fixed in Cape Town, preferably northern suburbs or central and an estimate as to the cost? I'd really like to avoid Partserve.

Thanks

EDIT: Change now. Everything now has a purple tinge.

EDIT 2: Everything fixed itself overnight, could be that the cable was bent in the section where the hinge was (I made sure it wasn't where it met the motherboard), issue seems fixed now.

Don't leave like that. Cable can be cut shorting to the ground, overloading electronic driver.
Get service manual, dissassembly display panel and visually inspect things. It could be also a LED driver, easier to repair and cheaper to replace. Good panel, worth to fix. If you buy a third party, quality might be not the same.

I'm worried about taking it apart and completely breaking it.

Never heard of updating an LED driver, how would I go about doing so? Nothing on the official page.
I've visually inspected the internals, all the cables seem good/connected and I cleared out the display connection to the motherboard, only thing left is the monitor and my experience there is sorely lacking. I'm also not sure I can get into the hinge part of it from looking at the design.

By grounding, would this be the part grounding, because I opened it a second time to make sure that the cable there is touching the metal as it was when i opened it.

Apologies for the blur, I made this picture the first time I opened it, this is a crop, and made a pic of the entire thing.
I did put the tape back down and the cable is touching the metal.

EDIT: could an issue be due to how the fan vents? The hot air is blown onto the screen or under the hinge as I had the screen all the way back.

It is a shielded cable, but touching to other metal parts is not what I am talking about. If external shield is punctured, fractured (or compressed), it could give indication of breaking or shorting internal connection. From the photo I don't see it happened. It seems the cable is attached to the metal part by a tape (this part partially covering a black screw). I do worry about this place, cable could be squized in this area. I can't judge from the picture.

Here is the link to download service manual:

The cable isn't squeezed I think, it would only be able to happen there at the hinge, will try and open it end of the week when I have proper tools at hand again.

Okay, had the issue again, turns out a lot of people complained after I was done. Turns out it's an issue with the last 2/3 versions of the Nvidia drivers.

If it were merely problems with drivers, you would notice during boot/setup that nothing is wrong before you boot Windows. Boot Linux or Hiren's CD and see what happens.

Brought it to PartServe on the 6th, got a quote after a week (and charged for it as well), I was forced to call for over an hour back and forth to get a confirmation of the quote, ~R3800 for screen and cable replacement.
Since they close over Christmas, between the 23rd and the 3rd of Jan, the parts will only arrive on the 16th of Jan. I had to call to find out about an ETA, nothing on their site, their site is broken and accepts the quote, even if you haven't accepted it yet, etc. That's more than a months working days to replace a screen, with more than a week taken just to assess that the screen has to be repaired.

China doesn't celebrate Christmas, why would it take over a month to deliver a part here, the damn laptop is even their poster when a client walks into the store.
Also, Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-Replacement-Screen-Laptop-Matte/dp/B015GDVLEO for less than $45. It can't be that expensive to import the screen. (sadly I was too dumb to check myself for a replacement screen, I only used their specific part code to check out the item). I refuse to use PartServe after this, have to wait over a month, deal with lousy communication and pay way to much. I suggest one stays away.

Oh, and I wouldn't suggest a quote:

Partserve is bounded by the agreement to use original parts, but Partserve sucks severly, which makes Lenovo not a good buy. Three months warranty is standard for their refurbished items. For any new parts they should give minimum full year warranty as stipulated by South African law. Payment can be contested in Small Claims Court as the above quote is unlawful.

The highlighted part means if costs of the job is below R200, they will repair it without confirmation.

When you get laptop back double check if something got missing...
Personally I would use this laptop with external monitor or get a new one.

That's why I went with them, to make sure, but it's not only Lenovo that uses PartServe, other brands as well. I suggest not caring if it's the "original" part as the one I linked on Amazon is also Lenovo approved.
Yeah, I will come knocking if anything messes up within a year regarding the part, 3 months only the labor.
That's why I added it, but I accepted the quote, therefore it is "waived" ergo absorbed into the final bill.

I opened it up, made a video, wrote down the serial of the RAM sticks, HDD and network interface, hopefully that will be enough.
And external monitor: the laptop travels near daily with me to uni and I use it in conjunction with a second monitor at home.

Don't pay if they don't give you back the original (faulty) panel. It will prevent them from selling it inside 'refurbished' equipment. Each screen has serial number, If you previously used AIDA64 for system checking, you can compare with a label.

Interesting software, will see if I can acquire a copy for next time. I'll ask for the faulty panel to be given to me as well, maybe I'll tinker with it for the other laptop with a damaged screen (it's in "retirement"), should be a fun past time.
