Lenovo Y5070

Nearly bought one - review comments on the screen put me off though. Seems like good value though - especially the alu case.

The Updated IPS screen has no Problems really. It's quite sharp. I only use it for gaming and programming though, with Photoshop only being a side thing till end of the year when I drop multimedia as a Subject.
 
My dad is probably going to get one of these in the next few days. If I have time, I'll run it through a few benchmarks and see how things fare.

Only thing I suggest is getting a faster HDD/SSD. The one in the laptop is really slow.
 
I was eyeing this machine for a while , priced at R15500 , but then e gigabyte p55w went on special at takealot for R20999 , with way better specs and a gtx970m , so I ended up buying that instead, very happy

Glad you like our P55 man ... and good news for you .. what you wished for will come true .. maybe not applicable to your current P55 , but new gen at least.
 
Based on the 24 hours I had with the Y5070, it's really not a bad machine. Being Haswell-based obviously has "poor" implications for battery life, though I saw an estimated four hours after a few tweaks. Fallout 4 runs at around 42fps on high settings with FXAA and 16x AF, and it looks really, really nice on the IPS display. My dad required 125% scaling for his eyesight, but it's still pretty good at that level, though fuzzy in places where there's no high-DPI awareness, like Chrome. Heat can be a bit of an issue, and I don't recommend using the notebook with the display closed, since that doesn't allow heat to vent out properly. Sound is excellent with good levels of volume and manages to avoid any hint of tinny-ness, though there isn't any way to improve bass levels. There's only a single M.2 port which is taken up by the WLAN card, and it is SATA-based.

I found a couple of oddities with the cooling. Closing the notebook while tethered to a monitor over HDMI results in lag in the UI and in games, but the GPU in use is still the GTX 960M, not the Intel HD 4600. Optimus isn't switching the discrete card out, so I'm left to assume that Lenovo's engineers have fiddled with the BIOS to downclock the GTX 960M when the lid is closed, because when it's open it immediately ramps up the framerate back to normal levels (monitoring with GPU-Z seems to support this). As a portable gaming powerhouse it's absolutely worth the money, but the odd cooling design does mean that things could have been done way better. Lenovo's erring on the side of caution here.

I don't seem to recall seeing this anywhere before the format, but this notebook also comes with Windows 10 Home "Single Language". The ISO for reinstalling the OS isn't available through the Windows 10 Media Creation tool, as that only gives you the regular multi-language ISOs. Instead, you have to grab your image from Microsoft's Techbench site. It appears that while users who upgrade Windows 8.1 SL to Windows 10 Home are getting the multi-language edition through the upgrade offer, some OEMs are still distributing this version in an effort to clear out stock of unused keys.

The issue you have with cooling is because the vent is just underneath the hinge for the screen.
I get about 3h30 min on medium brightness while using WiFi, so 4h should be doable in airplane mode + min brightness + underclocking things.

Yeah I know. It's not a bad design, it could just be better if they were venting it out through the back instead of under the display. I suppose that would have significantly changed the profile overall, since the hinges would have to be changed to accommodate that.

Yeah, when I first got it I thought those would be vents, might be that due to the speakers they couldn't do it like that.
Ah well, it is a good laptop overall, though better laptops are starting to come on the market, obsolescence.
