Johannesburg – A leopard was put down after it attacked a tour guide in the Kruger National Park on Thursday, SANParks said.

The guide and about six tourists were in an open safari vehicle watching the leopard, which was about 2m away, on the H4-1 road near the Skukuza camp around 13:00, spokesperson William Mabasa said in a statement.

Mabasa said the animal "cunningly disappeared" and snuck around to the driver’s side of the vehicle and attacked the guide. The Lowvelder online named him as Curtis Plumb, 38.

"Suddenly the leopard leapt and grabbed his arm, trying to jump into the vehicle," Mabasa said.

"Everybody in the vehicle started hitting the leopard with any object they had with them. The leopard would not let go of the guide’s arm; until a tourist from another vehicle rushed and repeatedly used his vehicle to scare off the animal and that is when it eventually let go."

Mabasa said it was badly injured and had to be put down.

"In the scuffle, when it eventually fell down, the guide was trying to reverse his vehicle and it fell under the wheel. On its own it was injured, probably from fighting with another leopard."

"There was no way we could leave it to suffer."

The Lowvelder quoted Lifemed paramedic Gerty Greyling as saying: "It’s difficult to elaborate on the extent of his injuries. The wound will most likely be cleaned in theatre and only then will one see how deep the lacerations are."

And no one spotted it. Huehuehue.

RIP leopard. Get well driver.

aaaww. Kitty. :( and the ranger lives to tell an epic tale.
My brothers friend was caught and killed by one in the KNP, the Chinese tourists just kept on taking pictures. Great work by the people on the vehicle.

At least it wasn't put down for no reason. If they had put it down just because of the attack it would suck.

Oh please, I highly doubt that happened that way. Leopards are hardly ever seen because they are notoriously scared of everything.

I would surmise that there is a very different story here than that one.

Mortally injured in an earlier attack. Then beaten senseless by handbags. Ridden over by a safari vehicle. Then shot to death.

Just wasn't this leopard's day was it.

Leopards attack unprovoked. I'm not suspicious of the story at all.

I think you mean lepers.

Hahaha I like the perspective you put on the story. But definitely wasnt that poor leopards day,at least the guide seems ok...leopards can easily kill a person.

Leopards are stalkers. If you read the books written by rangers in the KNP they tell the same tale.
Leopards watch their prey stalk them for weeks. Recognize patterns. And because they are such silent creatures they catch you in your habits.

we think they attack unprovoked, but it's because we didn't see them and think we did nothing to make them feel threatened.

The guide I was talking about earlier, had a routine.
Everyday he would do the tourist drive and everyday he would stop at the bridge ( one of those you can get out of) and everyday he smoked a cigarette while the tourists looked at the river.

Another ranger ( can't remember his name ) survived a leopard attack, in his book he wrote that he knew he should not create routines but as we humans are we have little patterns. He went to his gate everyday at 5 with his dog and locked it. The leopard got him at the gate at 5.

Wild animal attacks in the wild.

Better put it down

It seems it was in poor condition from previous injuries, which accounts for its unusual behaviour.

Yeah it was actually a canned hunt & demolition derby with foreign spectators dressed in white robes pointing their thumbs down.

I remember hearing about this incident, it caused quite a stir amongst the game ranging community if I remember correctly.
