Lets Compare Prices!

I'm not too cool for that, I just know a little secret. It's called the "Green Line".

I assume you are referring to the green side of customs where you say you have nothing to declare? So in other words you are a criminal, but think its justified since, after all, this is you we're talking about. You're above the law, heaven forbid you pay a tiny bit more for your goods at customs.

If you're getting someone to bring it over (like family) then normal custom duties apply - First R3000 is free, then you pay 20% of each Rand above that up to a maximum of R15 000. Above R15 000 you start paying 'normal' duties (ie a lot more).

Well done on pulling out that "fact" out of a funny place. lol - Blanket insult indeed ...

@HJF
This is a public discussion forum. Your Comment is not in the spirit of the forum as a whole imo. We so have some "knowitalls", but we then have some other "knowitalls" that correct them. In the end it all balances out.

E.g I would like to comment on Archer's facts and also mention to him that I seem to recall that you also get the option of a blanket customs tax at the airport. Like a flat fee tax. Cannot remember how it works though. But then you even get taxed on the exempt stuff. Work a look, depending on what you are bringing in. Unless you are willing to take that risk and do not "declare" anything ;) ;)

What I explained there was the blanket assessment...

Pretty much.

I Imported 2 cameras last month, one was a wireless security camera and the other a Sanyo camcorder (not available in SA). The security camera cost me R1700.00 from Hong Kong, customs clearing it cost me an additional 24% to get it (14%vat and 10% Duty). The second Camera (also From Hong Kong, but a different supplier and courier) Cost me R2400.00. But when it got here the documentation was a bit off what it actually cost and was only valued at $80 according to the manifest ?!?! So I only had to pay Vat and that was it... For those interested you can check it here http://sanyo.com/xacti/english/products/vpc_wh1/index.html I saved a fortune on this ... considering its little brother (http://www.makro.co.za/p/39308/sanyo-full-hd-ca100-underwater-video-camera/) sells for about R4500 - R5000 in SA!!! So sometimes Importing is worth it!

OP hasn't posted in a while. He probably ended up paying more for the import then he would have if he had gotten it locally, so now he's too embarrassed to say anything. Shame. Or maybe the card he imported was faulty and now he can't return it since it was imported.

It's the festive season.. he will probably have to wait 'till January to get goods.

But this has been one nasty thread and maybe a good one in a way. We always see prices in UK/USA stores and convert it to rands.. then think.. WTF I would rather just import it. But there are always other costs involved, i.e. import duties, courier and after market support.

Don't get me wrong, I've imported stuff nearly half the price of what you can get it locally, but it's not always the case.

I'm not the original poster but I got my EVGA GTX 570 about a week ago and it's been running great. Worked out to +-R2400.

They retail for about R3800 locally. R1400 "saving". Not too bad for a difficult to use warranty / warranty-less product. Not sure if I'd do it though as I'd have to pay shipping and tax/customs on top of it all etc etc if I wanted to do this. It is a shame that not all of us folk got fandamily overseas, never mind overseas fandamily that is willing to walk the green line at times...

Mind showing me where the EVGA GTX 570 retails for R3800? Couldn't find it myself other than at Take2. The warranty doesn't worry me in the slightest, I ship it to the US if it pops or simply wait 6 months and don't pay shipping. I have a spare card here(EVGA GTX 260 also from the US)

Doubt I would buy a gpu locally again, even some other components I'll just get from the US. I found out a little late but I could have gotten a Corsair Force Series 240GB SSD for $399(+-R2700 at the time) on special, it's R6610 at prophecy. :(

Yeah, R2400 for the GTX 570 is a fantastic price. It's just shame that it doesn't retail for that here :(

I'm still curious to see if the original poster managed to get his card for as cheap as he originally thought it would be.
If his card still didn't arrive, then it would be pretty pointless for most people to import it, since many people don't want to wait that long!
I'm still waiting for my Dell laptop keyboard to arrive that I've imported via Take2.
