Lets face it, there is hardly any other reason to mod or chip a console but for piracy. Personally I believe that folks should tinker with their tech and therefore am personally in favour of modding and chipping threads as long as you guys not express a desire to "be able to play copied games" or point people in the direction of places to obtain pirated goods.

Do not mention "That which shall not be mentioned" but experiment like mad IMO. Tweak your hardware to the max, make it do cool stuff, mod and chip away, just do not mention piracy as the driving force for it.... I will be forced to remove it.

Rather try and run Linux on your Xbox or try and turn it into a sat nav system or something like that... ;)

Is this sort of censorship necessary? I think people should be free to talk about software copying if they want: talking about it is not illegal, whereas doing it is - if they are going to do it that's another story entirely and their own problem!

i always thought a chipped playstation had a bit of the cover missing! the newspapers were full of damaged playstations. I thought people threw them against the wall or the dog out of anger!

Perhaps - but look at it this way: if someone on the forum is going off about how many illegal gamez & warez they have and the police subpoena RPM for the users' details (e-mail, IP history) so that they can prosecute - then what will happen? Everyone will be pissed off because RPM had to divulge the information and then the forum goes bang.

You are saying its fine to talk about piracy on the forum in terms of advertising or assiting in the activity.. kk, being an original member I trust you, obviously cant know more myself. The older the wiser I guess.

I personally am currently unable to fund the rules page or thread, even though I havnt really looked that much.
 
There are those that that do that sort of thing not for piracy,but for convienience,KILL those threads..I say kill those threads.( by the way mr g sorry about the interview that i was to give,I was soooo busy the past 2 weeks,Hope i can do it in the future...)To be a hack jack is not a easy life

Good point, MaD, I see how this is a problem. However, MyADSL has not done as well as it has by being scared of lawsuits - neither has Hellkom!

By the same logic, we should also stop any threads about unlicensed network connections spanning property borders (illegal under some obsure and monopolistic law), for example?

Pah. My reference to being an original member was merely countering the tone of your post, which I took to be: "it's in the rules, noob, don't question it and just listen". (this is an exaggerated version) - if this was not your intended tone then I have misinterpreted and I apologise :) Also note the ";)" after the comment!

Further, there is no rules page that I am aware of either, and definitely no rules censoring what can and can't be said. The closest thing is rpm's warning in the Current Affairs forum that certain right-wing elements be careful what they say ;) Thus my question was largely rhetorical.

And yes, I am saying that it is fine to talk about piracy on a forum. :)

I think antowan made it clear in his post about how far we can go. It's fine to talk about these issues as long as you don't openly state your intentions. The same would apply to the property border, news server, torrent etc threads - they should be fine as long you one doesn't openly state how you plan on exploiting these issues (for example what content you download from the news servers or torrent sites).

It's one thing saying that you're going to chip your XBox. It's a totally different thing saying that due to having a chipped XBox, you intend on purchasing pirated games, and listing websites where you intend on purchasing them. I think it's a fair enough request not to be called censorship, don't you guys?
 
I really dont want to go to jail for saying zhit on the forum.
I know where to draw the line,( i dont surport piracy)But i was thinkin about the other people,
 
I would trust Antowan's leadership on this - I think he has a superior understanding of the broader context+possible implications right now.

Perhaps in future conditions will change, and I hope they do.

Just a clarification. There are places on the net where the pirates can find their fixes. Places made for that explicit purpose. If we allow the advertising of pirated material be they in the physical or cyber realm, the forum will simply morph into a classifieds section for pirates.

Personally I have never deleted threads about the ethics, validity, usefulness/uselessness of piracy or such related discussions. We cannot however allow folks to point to specific files or locations that are pirated or contain pirated materials. You can use email or PMs for that if you really, really, reeeaaallyyy cannot do without.

Modding, reverse engineering etc, have been part of the innovation cycle of computing for many a year and should not be constrained IMO.

Discuss all the elements of piracy if you want, just don't point to any pirated material...

ROFL! :D Just so you know, they (whoever they would be) will have to string the mods of this forum up by their toes, cut out our tongues and toast us alive before they would get your info from us. Even then they'd still need a court order to make us consider giving them anything remotely useful.

We will defend forumites tooth and nail, even if something unlawful was said. We just want to prevent getting things from moving that far, so a little bit of self policing is necessary. Not censorship. There is very little you cannot say on this forum. :)
